Recommend a complete dry food for 11 year old lab

Can anyone recommend a good complete dry food for my lovely 11 year old lazy (and slightly podgy) labrador please?

We've been using Arden Grange light for the last year or so but wondered if there was anything else we could try?

Get yourself over to allaboutdogfood.co.uk for independent reviews of a massive number of dog foods. You can filter by age to see all those foods that might suit a dog 10+ as well as type (dry, wet, raw etc.). A really useful site...

Ours has been fed on burns chicken and rice all her life (now 13).

Not sure it is better but it is all I know and it suits my dog.

Hills metabolic weight management is a good food if your dog could do with loosing a little weight. They also do one called weight management and mobility which has a joint supplement which older dogs sometimes need. Any of the mid range priced foods targeted towards older dogs should be fine

Also second the all about dog food site. Lots of info on there you might be surprised at the scores for some of the foods you thought were good

A third recommendation for allaboutdogfood to search for a food that suits you. Some of the foods with fancy names, the ingredient list for hills science plan metabolic weight management scores a poor 1.8 out of 5.

When our lab needed to lose weight recently while on restricted exercise we reduced his daily food (gave slightly less that pack recommended amount for the weight he should be, weighed food daily) and restricted treats and he quickly lost 4kg over 5 months. We were using Milles Wolfheart’s countryside and switched to their highland mix which is slightly lower fat/calories.

allaboutdogfood.co.uk is a great website to compare foods.

If your goal is to reduce weight (as you mentioned him being podgy) would switching to a good quality wet food be something to consider as you need to feed more quantity with wet for the same amount of calories in dry so it could help him feel fuller whilst you cut down the overall calories?

My 9 and half year old lab is on Wuffitmix Supreme Condition. It is for older/overweight dogs, low calorie etc. She is in great condition, regularly does Parkrun with my friend and is a stable 29kg. Highly recommend it.

Nothing wrong with AG Light. Good food and even more so if she does well on it.

I’d soak any dry food diet before feeding though.

Allaboutdogfood is just one persons opinion.

Someone with a decades worth of experience who, on his own words “wants to change the world”.

Well meaning enough but just someone’s opinion.

Agreed, but what it does allow you to do is quickly discount a lot of poor quality foods, see what’s left in your bugdet (or see what the best are in your budget) and then view the ingredients of those that are left, choose any specifics (grain free, chicken free etc) and then make your own decision.
