anxious dog at night when it's blowing a gale outside

Have been up since 2.20am this morning because our dog is suddenly freaked out by the wind. This is the second time this has happened recently. I tried to sleep downstairs with him but he was prowling around, on and off sofa, trying to get behind the sofa. I put the TV on and the light but it made no difference whatsoever.

DH has gone to look for some calming remedies at the shops but has anyone else tried something that has helped their pooch. I'm exhausted and if it happens again tonight poor DH is on duty.Sad

My dog is very vocal with noises outside. I find the tv and radio only seems to mask them up to a point. What works best for our dog is having a white noise machine at night.

Thanks BiteyShark hadn't thought of that. Will try anything. He is 7 years old and we've never had a problem until recently.

Background noise
Is he used to a crate? If so you could cover it.
Adaptil or similar
Thunder shirt
I know some people have used rescue remedy.

Oh another thing is that mine hates is anything moving, e.g. wind blowing curtains or shadows from trees outside so we have to make sure curtains are closed and don't flap about with any drafts etc.

One of mine is frantic when there is thunder and not keen on fireworks. We tried Adaptil room spray on fireworks night last year and that did seem to help a bit. Otherwise the only solution is clear out the bottom of the wardrobe / bookcase and make him a nest with a dressing gown - not ideal!

Thanks for all the suggestions. He did have a crate when he was younger but he calmed down so much that he was quite happy just staying in the living room. We are going to look into Adaptil / rescue remedy and a few other things and hopefully find something suitable.
