Is anyone watching this? Since when did the Springdale, the Jackahuahua, the Borador etc etc become recognised breeds?! Confused

Betting on cockerpoo being number 1!

blueskypink · 16/01/2018 20:47

Nah! Got to be a Labrador!!

Too many 'designer crosses' for my liking. Loving the stories though - and the singing Basenji.

blueskypink · 16/01/2018 20:59

Have been blubbing over Walnut. Familiar with the story, but it gets me every time.

We do have what I suppose is classed as a 'Shepador' though always refer to her as a Lab Cross.

Mini schnauzer came in at 29 Smile

Valerrie · 16/01/2018 21:09

So pissed off with this program. Half of them are mongrels, not breeds. Ridiculous.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/01/2018 21:22

What was number 1?

PantPlot · 16/01/2018 21:26

So far I've blubbed at Walnut, the abandoned poodles and the dachshund who got wheels. Ffs I'm a wet lettuce.

PantPlot · 16/01/2018 21:27

They've just got to the top ten I think

picklemepopcorn · 16/01/2018 21:35

If the mongrels are increasing the available range of happy and healthy dogs to replace overbred, inbred dogs, than I'm all for it. People want some idea of the qualities their dog will have, so these breeds help.

blueskypink · 16/01/2018 21:43

Had to fast forward over the poodles. I despair.

missbattenburg · 16/01/2018 21:45

I think any dog lover would celebrate a greater gene pool for dog breeds but one inbred pedigree + one inbred pedigree ≠ a happy, healthy puppy.

Ditto, the creation of new breeds to better match the requirements of a modern dog owner is also good news for the whole species. I'm just not sure people breeding popular cross-breeds have that aim in mind. I suspect a large amount just have £ signs in their eyes.

Valerrie · 16/01/2018 21:52

Not when most designer crosses are literally bred to sell, without having any of the relevant breed health tests.

picklemepopcorn · 16/01/2018 21:52

I'd agree, bad breeders are a nightmare. The cross breeds I've met seem to be very healthy and happy, unlike the short lived King Charles' (or is it cavalier?), unable to run English bulldog (I think) etc. My labradoodle, shitsu/poodle, and various cross owning friends are having no trouble with 5heir dogs at all.

picklemepopcorn · 16/01/2018 21:54

My rescue frenchie cross something or other is neurotic. Presumably was once a puppy farmed dog. I know it isn't a cure all. But it's a direction to explore. Frenchies, GSDs, small spaniels, bulldogs, all so compromised l

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/01/2018 22:01

Didn’t watch. What was no.1 French Bulldog?

Valerrie · 16/01/2018 22:02

Decent breeders of dogs with health issues do everything they can to improve the breed. Unfortunately again it's the people who breed for money who don't bother with health testing and genetic profiling. They just pop out puppies, show their faces at dog shows in order to sell more puppies and rake it in.

And it's disgusting.

Valerrie · 16/01/2018 22:02

Lab was number one. French Bulldog was 30 something.

Slartybartfast · 16/01/2018 22:07

But the good news is mongrel , mixture types number 2, that and jack Russell being number 2 bought a tear to my eye

Slartybartfast · 16/01/2018 22:08

Jack Russell third I mean

olliegarchy99 · 17/01/2018 07:07

cried about walnut the whippet (again - but those eyes Sad) and the other sad stories.
Pleased it was a labrador at no 1 spot (should have been a lurcher but never mind). Could not stay up till 10 pm - still post viral weak.

HamishBamish · 17/01/2018 07:12

The lab was a worthy winner. Lovely dogs.

Elphame · 17/01/2018 09:59

Quite glad my breed was way way down the listings. Being popular is not always in the best interests of the dogs or the long term health of the breed.

SleightOfMind · 17/01/2018 10:06

Thrilled that Greyhounds came in at 20. Especially as they rarely come as cute puppies so most of those would be adult rescue dogs.
