Labrador with diabetes - eyesight failing

Our beautiful Labrador was diagnosed with diabetes around August time.

She had been lethargic and drinking a lot as well as losing weight rapidly and after a few trips the vet tested her blood and found her sugars to be in the high 20s.

We got insulin to give her and after a few visits the blood sugar came down to about 14. Still high for her but a lot better than before, she's drinking less, looks better and has lots more energy.

The last vet visit it was up to 25 and she altered her insulin.

They talked about spaying her but due to her age (we got her as a pup and have her ten years past) thought that would cause her more bother.

Anyway, in the past few days I have noticed her eyes clouding over. She is walking into furniture and looking right past us when we talk to her.

I'm assuming this is all part of her diabetes? She's not due back at the vet for another two weeks but would we be better taking her back anytime to see about her eyes?

She's not in bad form, she as quiet as a mouse and content.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I think you would be better off taking her to the vet on Monday. Blindness is a known and irreversible complication of diabetes, and indicates that it's not well controlled and something will need to be done to alter her blood sugar.

Have you talked to the vet about her diet? Some diets are higher in sugar than others; the big commercial brands can be particularly guilty of this.

Hi there, yes the vet has talked to us about her diet.

She currently gets a measured amount at 7.30am before her insulin then the same amount at 7.30pm before her insulin. No snacks at all, not even doggy treats. She literally has her grain free food (bought from our vet) and that's it.

Please consider having her spayed it is very, very difficult to stabilise entire female diabetics. All the internal medicines specialists recommend this as soon as diagnosed regardless of age.
The cataracts can be removed by a specialist surgeon to prevent the lens rupturing,

Our vet said she didn't recommend spaying at her age as it could cause a lot of complications.
