She’s been sleeping in my son’s room (been here 6 days) but tonight she just got in. I shut the door of crate and she’s gone to sleep! Should I expect to be woken? Feeling happy yet worried.

Mine slept through from 8 weeks so wait and see you may be in luck!

ThespianTendencies · 09/01/2018 07:14

Well I am amazed! Not a peep from her unti I came down at 7am and let her out. Then I took her into the garden where she had a wee and a poo and now we are watching TV and playing.Smile

Ah brilliant girl. She might have a set back or two though just to warn you!

ThespianTendencies · 09/01/2018 07:26

ThroughThickAndThin01 - I'm almost thinking it must be a flook! I kept waking up making sure she wasn't whipering but no, she was silent all night, also had her door and my door open, just in case!

My parents dog slept through from day one (they got up once the first night but never again) and hasn't made a sound since! She's 18 Months now, and their dog before her did the same Smile
It definitely happens!

I keep thinking I was just lucky last night. But she is seriously brilliant! Seems well adjusted and bright as a button.

2nd night of pup in crate and she is no trouble at all! She had a little poo on her pad (to one side of the crate) and must have hopped back into bed until I woke her at 7am. I cannot believe how good she is....Am I being lulled into a false sense of security with her..?!

Are you happy with using pads? The reason I was asking is that whilst some people swear by them others find it prolongs toilet training as they are effectively saying that it's ok to pee and poo inside (but only in certain conditions) and can confuse some pups.

Personally I would be taking the pup out earlier (during the night) so she doesn't get used to pooing in the crate.

ThespianTendencies · 10/01/2018 11:45

I am not using pads in the house - I am watching her like a hawk and popping her outside frequently. She understand that she needs to wee outside but she is not at the stage of letting me know so we have a way to go! She was using pads at the breeders so she associates them with being able to relieve herself. I wont use them indefinitely, but i feel comfortable using them in the crate until she can hold herself overnight.

I have had two puppies in my adult life, I never once got up to either or used pads, I don't understand why others do. I guess whatever works for that dog owner.

Pleased for you OP, clever dog.

ThespianTendencies · 10/01/2018 12:34

TopBitch I guess it depends on the pup. I have had two pups too and never got up in the middle of the night. I go to bed around 1130-12 and up again at 7am weekdays so 7 hours is probably about the max for a young pup. In days gone by I am sure my parents never got up to puppies either. I kind of figure that if Mum dog sleeps all night whilst her pups are with her that the pups would follow suit. I think there is a lot of foisting of human traits on a dog with regard to raising them but each to his/her own - whatever works! It is a lot like parenting in many ways.
