What is your routine? Is it fair to cage all day? I would be grateful for any tips.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 07/01/2018 13:12

Yes I do but a mix of working at home and in the office. I had contemplated just getting someone in twice a day for puppy visits on my office days but it soon became apartment that would not be enough for my pup so he goes to day care instead. It's so worth every penny as he loves going and is now 14 months and still goes to the same place.

Wakeuptortoise · 07/01/2018 13:14

No. It is not fair. Don't get a puppy. You are not a suitable person to own a live animal.

MaisyMary77 · 07/01/2018 13:17

Personally I wouldn’t consider it. I work from home and having a puppy (chocolate lab) was difficult enough with me being there most of the time! I don’t think it would be fair to cage all day.

keepondreaming · 07/01/2018 13:24

No. Just no.

ontheedge99 · 07/01/2018 13:25

* Is it fair to cage all day? *

What do you think? A puppy that could otherwise go to a home with attention, cuddles, walks and people around during the day would - be sat in a cage all day.

Does that sound fair?

Lots of doggy daycare about plus dog walkers or sitters

Look at pricing even if it's 3 days a week

pinkhorse · 07/01/2018 13:33

You can not be seriously thinking about leaving a puppy in a cage all day 5 days a week!

AJPTaylor · 07/01/2018 13:34

we decided that pup not workable. looking at a rehomed greyhound as a suitable dog but thats with me being back at 3 and a dogwalker earlier in the day

Hoppinggreen · 07/01/2018 13:36

The fact that you even have to ask worries me,
Some people ( not me) with older dogs do leave them alone all day but a puppy, in a crate?
No bloody way

GertrudeCB · 07/01/2018 13:38

I work ft, but DH is retired so ddog has company basically all day every day.
Cage all day ? For a social animal, especially a baby one? Seriously, get a goldfish instead Hmm

mammmamia · 07/01/2018 13:38

Cage all day Shock

mammmamia · 07/01/2018 13:39

Please don't get a puppy if you have to ask this question.

UrsulaPandress · 07/01/2018 13:39

Of course it is not bloody ok.

Are you for real??????

GinIsIn · 07/01/2018 13:40

Fucks sake

onlyconnect · 07/01/2018 13:40

I find it staggering that presumably an "animal lover" would contemplate this. But then those who profess to love animals are often the ones to cage them. I despair.

rightsaidfrederickII · 07/01/2018 13:40

You are not a suitable person to own a live animal.

Bit far. Dogs are about the only animals that are considered to need 20 hours a day of human company. Cats, fish, small furries etc etc do fine with people who work full time.

TwitterQueen1 · 07/01/2018 13:40

I would report you to the RSPCA if you left a puppy in a cage all day every day. Please don't get a dog.

swimster01 · 07/01/2018 13:43

Depends on whether you are out of the house all day or not. Do you work from home at all?

If you are out of the house all day 5 days a week, it is a recipe for disaster. The early days of having a puppy were really stressful and we only managed because one of us was working from home (and still does most of the time).

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 07/01/2018 13:45

Are you being serious OP? I truly hope not.

MayFayner · 07/01/2018 13:51

My sister did this. She and her partner would leave the house at 7.30am or so and return about 12 hours later. During that time my mother and father would make (separate) visits to the house to interact with the puppy and give him exercise.

It wasn't enough- by far. The dog (he's a Westie) had/ has serious behavioural problems. He has been a very unhappy dog at points.

He has improved massively over time but only because my (retired) dad has had him full-time since the day my niece was born. It was supposed to be a temporary arrangement- nearly 7 years ago. Dad and the dog adore each other, so it's a happy ending, but things could have turned out horribly if my dad hadn't taken him.

ontheedge99 · 07/01/2018 13:51

Are you for real? I feel I must say this.

Dalg · 07/01/2018 13:56

I am a dog walker. I feel really sorry for the puppy I walk who is left alone all day, except for the one hour she is with me. She is left in one room all day. She has done a lot of damage to that room. She is a lovely friendly dog, I often imagine how happy she would be if she lived in a home where she had company all day. I hardly ever leave my cat alone all day. I work short hours but wouldn't get a puppy.

Chippyway · 07/01/2018 13:59

If you’re seriously asking if it’s okay to cage them all day PLEASE DO NOT GET A DOG

YorkshireLurker · 07/01/2018 14:00

We had a puppy and after a week our shifts changed so we were out 4 days a week full time together. We gave him a long walk before work and gave him the run of the living room with plenty of fresh water, toys, puppy pads etc and we tried to pop home at lunchtime when we could. We have a dog cam too and he just slept all day anyway!

The puppy was fine and wasn't destructive (pug) and has grown up into a well socialised delightful dog.

Plenty of exercise before you go and when you get back and it will be fine!
