Pup in season

Hi

I think my 7 month old Schnauzer/poodle cross pup is in season? I can see a swollen, pink area ( that isn’t normally there) just above her back legs.

Any tips? I’m thinking not to walk her - we live in an area with lots of dogs ( dog walkers even drive here to walk big groups of dogs). Anything else I should be aware of? Her castrated last month brother is visiting tomorrow as he lives with my parents, will that be an issue? Could she find that difficult?

Sorry for all the questions!

I've not had to deal with this specific issue as PestDog is a neutered boy.

However, you may find that the brother does decide to try it on, so be prepared to separate if necessary.

I think it’s cruel not to walk them in all honesty

It’s not difficult to be careful. Walk her at quiet times. Get up at 5am and walk her then if you have to. That’s what I did. Walked her at 5am when nobody was about and again at 10pm. Just keep her on the lead.

If it’s her first season she will likely be in season for a long time. My dogs first season lasted almost 4 weeks. It would’ve been cruel to keep her in for that long

It does sound like she is in season. It lasts about 3 weeks. They usually bleed for about 7-10 days, but it's actually after that (around day 10-12) that they will be ready to mate. You need to be very vigilant! Male dogs can smell a bitch in heat for miles, and all her instincts will be telling her to get out and get mated. Before I got my first bitch neutered I had a jack Russell try to get in our cat flap then he sat in the garden in the rain for 2 days!

If you're planning to get her neutered you should do it in a couple of months time.

Great thanks everyone! I’ll look at taking her out around not so popular dog walking times. It’s a shame as we’ve just cracked recall - she’s brilliant- I hope she doesn’t forget it!!

We’re planning on getting her spayed so I’ll get that booked in for the spring

Her brother will absolutely know she is in season, neutered or not. I would suspect if his neutering is fairly recent he may well still be capable if fathering pups though would want to check this with a vet.

Even though he is neutered you really don't want him to learn how to start humping his sister so you may need to keep them separate.

There will also be a few days when she is desperate to get to any male in the vicinity ( again, whether they are neutered or not)

Thanks Bubble, he was neutered on the 8th Dec. I think I’ll suggest he doesn’t come, there’s no need for it and it’ll be a hassle to keep them seperated
