Chihuahua pup and walks

So my little pup had his 2nd jab tonight ... how long /far can he walk?
His big brother (a bichon frise) goes fir a walk 2-3 times a day for about 15 minutes ... we do a set route... would pup manage that ..? I was very careful with big boy . But getting varying opinions re chihuahua online ...he's 10 weeks and 1.03kg bye ... but with the energy of a Tasmanian devil 😊😊😊

You need to give it a few more days yet as the vaccines take a while to build up antibodies.

He should then be able to manage 15 mins twice a day but be prepared for it to take a few weeks for him to really understand the point of walks. You might want to walk him separately for the first few times because much of the walk is likely be standing about encouraging him to get moving and helping him learn about the lead, waiting at road sides (if that's what you do), waiting while you pick up poop etc. This is likely to be very boring and frustrating for your adult dog.

As he is so small I would also be tempted to totally skip any days when the weather is cold - he is too young to regulate his own body temp (won't be able to do so reliably until he is about 6 months old) and is too small to hold warmth for any length of time.

Other than that, just watch him and pick him up and carry him if he looks too tired. He should be tired but not exhausted by the time you get back. If he is exhausted then you have walked him too far.

Normally 5 minutes per month of age, so at 6 months, a 30 minute walk....

Also, especially if he’s shorthaired, some jumpers/coats to keep him snug. Chihuahuas aren’t good with cold generally, they did originate in Mexico!

Well... dunno if it's relevant... but we live on a Scottish island ... renowned for wind ... and he came from a neighbhoring island ... so he definitely weatherproofed 😊😊😂😊😊... (that said he has a jumper) ... was more the worry of joint damage ... because .. as I said before ... conflicting advice re chihuahuas...😊😊but again thankyou 😊

I have two chis - and they are fair weather walkers. The girl will only go out if it’s warm dry and not windy! Your puppy might also shed his coat - mine did and she went practically bald. So a good wind proof coat is really important especially in Scotland 🙂

My chi might have a veritable wardrobe of jumpers, hoodies and coats.... but once wrapped up she loves a good walk, as long as it’s not actually raining. It’s great watching her run about belly-deep in dry leaves being blown about by the wind - proper dog, even at just 2.5kg!
