We adopted a beautiful little terrier cross last week. She was dumped at a pound after living with travellers her whole life. She is a lovely little girl but as soon as you put a lead on her she just freezes! She's obviously used to roaming free. Have put the lead on her to wear around the house and she's fine with that.. just want to be able to take her for a walk! Any help would be much appreciated x

Would a harness be more accepted? Wouldn't be her neck getting pulled!!
Harness on and lots of treats!!

Sorry I meant she has a harness on and a lead! So not her neck being pulled. She just freezes!

When mine was a puppy he hated walking on a lead and would refuse to budge. What helped was us driving to a 'safe' area to do off lead so he only had the lead on for a short time before and after the off lead walk so he started to accept the lead more and more until he was happy to walk with a lead.

If you aren't sure of his recall you could attach a long lead and an ordinary lead to the harness and do something similar.

If you put a treat a foot or so in front of her will she walk forward?

One of my dogs really doesn't like her harness. She'll walk much better on a collar. Not ideal but I'm hoping as she gets older (and braver) I can swap her over to a better harness.

The other things we did was walk her with her favourite tug toy, gave it a squeak if she looks like she was nervous etc, and had her favourite treats to encourage her with
