has anyone else got a firework loving dog?

My dog's always barked when fireworks go off, so I thought he must be scared and kept him inside, turned TV up etc.
Yesterday evening, well before midnight, he was in the garden and there was an unexpected firework display very close by. The sound was deafening. I went to get dog in but he seemed to be really enjoying himself watching the display, jumping in the air as if he wanted to catch the sparkly whooshing things.
When it was finished he came in, tail wagging looking really happy and calm Smile.

He's a GSD, so not a gun dog. My lab slept through the whole thing.

I have had 2 dogs that also seems to enjoy them!! One also loved sitting staring into the coal fire!! We called her a pyromaniac!!

PantPlot · 01/01/2018 12:20

My dog is totally unfazed by them.

Pick up a can of deodorant though and she'll shoot out of the room on her belly Hmm

ScarlettInSpace · 01/01/2018 12:24

My dog isn’t really bothered by them. I don’t tell many people that though as he’s a great excuse if I don’t want to go out around bonfire night or NYE Blush

VivaLeBeaver · 01/01/2018 12:29

My spaniel x used to enjoy watching them out the window. Until dh started winding her up with a constant “what is it, what is it” every time there were any. Now she seems a bit worried about it and hides under the table panting.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/01/2018 12:30

Mine also likes it. Terrier, totally unphased by anything

ReinettePompadour · 01/01/2018 12:33

Spaniels here and they like them too. If I try to bring them in they get cross. I had setters before and they too weren't phased by fireworks.

I do think that lots of dogs would be better if they could actually see whats making the noise and keeping them indoors out of the way doesn't help them because they can still hear the bangs.

Medeci · 01/01/2018 12:35

I'm surprised he wasn't bothered by the noise. The bangs made my ears hurt and I thought dog hearing was much more sensitive than humans.

We brought our puppy home just before Hallowe'en and he was longing to get out and see where the bangs were coming from! Trial-bred setter though so we'd have been surprised and disappointed if he was gun-shy.

rightsaidfrederickII · 01/01/2018 16:40

PestDog doesn't care about fireworks. You'd think he was deaf. It's probably because he's an inner city dog and used to a variety of noises.

RandomMess · 01/01/2018 16:47

One of our cats used to rush out to watch Confused

Paddingtonthebear · 01/01/2018 16:50

Ours is totally unphased by them. Barks at our new Hoover though. And barks at the noise of car doors slamming outside. And barks at inanimate objects like garden ornaments Confused

GinasGirl · 01/01/2018 16:56

My dog loves fireworks, jumps up on the garden table to get a better look!

fleshmarketclose · 01/01/2018 17:04

Eric's not bothered by them either he likes to sit on the window sill to get a good view. Never flinches at the bangs but goes bonkers when any neighbour dares to move a dustbin Hmm

Paddingtonthebear · 01/01/2018 17:05

Eric sounds like my dog Grin what breed?

TheGonnagle · 01/01/2018 17:09

I have a cat who sits on the window sill to watch them all night.

Biggreygoose · 01/01/2018 17:11

My old lab used to hare around the living room and dig under the sofa looking for all the pigeons I had clearly shot.

When he didn't find any he would look at me like 'WTF mate, you're worse than usual today'

I miss him. Sad

namechange2222 · 01/01/2018 18:12

Mine are terriers and totally reactive usually ( you name it, a bird or leaf falling) However with fireworks they just don't react. It's the same with every dog I've owned. When we lived in a large town with numerous fireworks I'd always have the dogs in the room with me as they were pups, announce that they were fireworks and that they were OK. Then totally ignore, the dogs followed suit

AbbieLexie · 01/01/2018 18:17

We had 2 standard schnauzers that loved fireworks! An absolute nightmare walking them! They would stop, sit and watch till they were finished. Few more steps and the next lot going off and the same scenario.

honeyroar · 01/01/2018 21:20

My wonderful lab, who died last month, would jump up at the back door window to watch the fireworks at the wedding hotel on the hill above us. She adored them. Once we Gaia bonfire and a firework tipped over firing shots sideways instead of into the air. Stupid dog rushed off to catch them.

My other lab doesn't even notice them, my terrier hates them.

MammaAgata · 01/01/2018 21:30

My neighbours set off a display to rival trafalger square a few years ago in a field behind our house. We have a wall of glass in one of our bedrooms overlooking the field, the display was just a few metres away. Ddog and I sat in the bedroom watching it, she was literally going ‘oooh!’ ‘Ahhhh!’ as they went off. The whole neighbourhood went berserk as they did it without warning or requesting permission from the land owner and horses were out in fields galloping around, local dogs and cats terrified etc. My dog loved them! She is admittedly very very laid back.

justpoppy · 02/01/2018 22:06

My shih tzu boy was the same. We lived in east London at the time so there were fireworks from Diwali right through to NYE. Really loud ones too. He used to whine at the door to be let out then sit in the garden staring at the sky. Stupid old thing - I miss him terribly. His sister isn’t phazed by them either but she’s blind and I suspect a little deaf too and at 14.5 spends more time sleeping than awake. Like someone else said though I don’t tell many people as it’s always a good excuse not to go to fireworks parties Wink
