Dog not sleeping at night due to wind

D dog whose 5 has been fine at sleeping but last few months is awake all night on a windy night , he whines and barks outside bedroom door , if we let him in he just keeps us awake with constant panting and on off bed every 5 minutes .
It starts with him crying to go out and then won't come back in as it seems he feels safer outside .
Have tried thunder shirt but still early days .
Seems daft that wind in day is no problem and fireworks are fine for him.
For context he has a covered cage with radio on above , 2 sofas with blankets and a sofa bed to choose from .
He doesn't seem anymore settled in our room so don't understand why he just whines and barks outside our room .
He did sleep with us from 8 weeks until 3 but was on/off bed all night that no one slept so we sleep alone now .
Thoughts please .

I have a white noise machine otherwise our dog would bark at every noise in the world at night Grin

furbaby · 30/12/2017 18:07

Thanks shark , do you think white noise is better than radio ?

It's a constant noise (a bit like a fan) designed to help muffle sounds and I find it helps me sleep as well whereas the radio is up and down with quiet bits. Whilst I use a radio when we go out in the day he is more settled sleeping with the white noise machine at night.

I originally had one to help me sleep, especially in hotels when people bang about but now use it all the time at home.

Maybe should try that as can download on my iPod ,
Anything to help it as been hell 😟we have had no sleep at all .
Keep looking on weather on my iPad but it just keeps changing, thinking we may get to sleep but then windy .

Will see what I can download on iPod .
Just don't understand why he's got to 5 being bullet proof and now keeping us up night after night .
Got work next week so hopefully wind will drop by then as can't be awake all night and work all day .

I have a physical machine but you should be able to find something to download.

Mine is very 'alert' to noise but this has stopped most of the barking at night bar the occasional very loud noise. It's just too quiet otherwise and any bang or rattle sets him off.

Any idea why he has got to 5 problem free and now keeps us awake most nights ? Was hoping Thundershirt would help but sadly no .
Have got him adaptl pills but need taking an hour before and last 6 hours but weather on iPad keeps changing and don't want to give them to him when not windy .
To be fair we are both exhausted no sleep In 3 nights .

It might not be the wind, I'd let the vet take a look and rule anything else out if it carries on

furbaby · 30/12/2017 19:00

Thanks kinky but thinking it wind as all quite here until 4am then huge gust of wind which woke me and minute later he's outside bedroom door barking ,
Husband gave in and slept on sofa with him which was nice for me .

Agree with kinky, any sudden change in behaviour is worth a trip to the vets for a health check just in case he’s got something like a minor ear infection.

Our 4 year old lab had developed a few new quirks including whining/anxious at night which we couldn’t put our finger on why, a couple of months after it started his knee cap completely dislocated, and since he’s been on pain killers and been operated on the whining has stopped. I’m kicking myself I didn’t realise earlier it could have been pain related.

SingingSands · 31/12/2017 00:27

If it’s only just happening now, perhaps he can hear something else when it’s windy? Something like... neighbours garden furniture rattling, or wind chimes? There must be something affected by the wind that he’s picking up on and getting nervous by.

Hope you find out the cause, it can’t be much fun for anyone on windy nights.

furbaby · 31/12/2017 10:54

Will see what vets says , need to see vet soon anyway as he's on a diet and we take him for weigh ins .
That is a thought about wind chimes or something similar , hadn't thought of that , I can't hear any new noises but doesn't mean he doesn't .
Thank you everyone.

Is there a draught? Maybe a window seal loose thats blowing at him?

furbaby · 31/12/2017 11:16

No draughts , he has beds in most rooms in house so plenty of choices as to where he wants to sleep .

Think I may have solved it ....
Christmas wreath on the front door , I haven't heard it at all but would make sense as to why he's suddenly so bad .
I've taken it down , fingers crossed that was the problem.
