Dog insurance

We are discussing the best dog insurance for our new pup. Have read a little on money supermarket & think life time insurance is the right one for us.

Can anyone recommend the best place to get insurance? Anything in particular I need to look out for.

Any advice is very welcome

It’s not the basic policy. I do need to sit and read the t&c but i’m sure i have the one where it’s up to a certain amount per condition per year. So while we’ve used up the allowance for this year, i thought as an ongoing condition they would continue to cover it up to that amount per year?

BiteyShark · 29/12/2017 18:36

If it is a life policy then yes as they made a big thing on my renewal that his ongoing conditions continue to be covered as long as I don't have a break in policy.

If it's the essential policy then it's only for 12 months from when the problem occurred then it is excluded. Maybe phone and ask which policy it is if you can't tell from your documents.

Definitely not the basic one. I think there were 3 quotes, basic, all singing all dancing, so i went for the middle one.

Might phone and ask. I have a feeling though even if the continue to cover his pre existing knee, which shouldn’t actually need any further treatment now it’s been fixed by an orthopaedic specialist, they won’t consider his other knee as part of the claim and will exclude it from a new claim. Which is maybe what the vet meant?

BiteyShark · 29/12/2017 18:49

Ah yes the other knee I think would be a new claim so you would have to pay the excess again. I also think if I remember correctly that if a condition runs into the next year you have to pay the excess again.

Happy to pay the excess again. But apparently the other knee is now completely excluded. The vet dealt with the insurance though so i may phone and check.

I'm with Animal friends as their reviews online seemed good. Is that not the case?
Petplan was too expensive for me unfortunately.

Not really I'm afraid fairgame. I used to work at an out of hours clinic and they would refuse direct claims with them as they had so many issues getting the money back :( as long as the T&Cs are in order you should be fine though. They might have loads of different cover options and some are better than others, I don't know for sure.

Thanks I'll bear it in mind when I need to renew in summer. The vets that my ex uses will only accept claims through Petplan, they refuse to deal with any other company so ex hasn't insured his dog.
I'm at a different vet but I will check with them again that they accept my insurance.

The practice I work in now don't do direct claims with any insurance company. So clients have to pay us then we claim it back for them. Although a nuisance for the owner, it hasn't stopped anyone from paying for the treatment and claiming back yet. We tried doing direct claims years ago but so many companies are rubbish, clients don't fully understand their policy (which I totally appreciate) and cover is often inadequate so for a small independent practice it can result in big losses trying to get the money back :/
