What's this under my dogs nose?

I have a 2 yr old Border Terrier. About a week ago over the space of a few hours he developed a pink spot under his nose. It's completely smooth, no scratch - it's like someone has literally rubbed out the black pigment.

Dh took him to the vets yesterday and basically the vet doesn't know. Says there's no infection he can see.

I've noticed today it looks like it's a bit larger and pinker then it was. Dog is fine in himself, walking, eating, drinking. The only thing he seems to do is lick it a bit more than normal. I will take him back to the vets after Xmas I think but in the meantime I'm perplexed.

Has anyone had similar?

Vitiligo?

Shambolical1 · 23/12/2017 14:34

Some dogs do lose pigment over the winter, and get it back again when the longer days come round again.

It can be connected to thyroid function too but if your dog is otherwise fine , that's doubtful.

I'd just keep an eye on it and not worry unless the texture changes or it gets sore or nasty looking. Straight back to vet if it does.

Looks like a histiocytoma. Wouldn’t worry.

If the skin breaks, it bleeds or grows/changes shape then go to vets. Otherwise it will probably disappear.

Quite common in young dogs, often called a red button (they tend to go red before disappearing).

Ok thanks everyone. You're all do knowledgable and better than google Grin.

Vitaligo seems possible as it literally looks like the pigment has been rubbed out. Today it's looks slightly larger and a bit pinker with definite edges. Still not troublesome to dog though. I will keep a close eye and hope it goes eventually.

Mine had a white spot on the top of her nose. Looked like pigment missing. She ran into a tree! It's black again now. Possible?!

Trampire · 23/12/2017 17:53

Colabottle10 histiocytoma definitely looks a possibility too as I think it's getting pinker. Many thanks.

His mouth

Trampire · 23/12/2017 17:56

Wolfiefan at first I thought it was an injury thing but I really can't see anything there. Anythings possible though Grin

There was no clear injury. I only know she ran into the tree as she was seen to do it!! No redness or bleeding or weeping or scab. Just a white bit.

Agree with the VN above - it’s a histiocytoma - common I. Young dogs.

Bit concerning that your Vet can’t recognise one Confused

Wolfiefan · 23/12/2017 18:01

We also had a histiocytoma. It was warty though. Raised thing. Definitely that as they biopsied!

Trampire · 23/12/2017 18:02

I've googled the images of histiocytoma and I'm not its that as it's not raised at all. It's completely smoothe, no bumps, or different texture. Unless they start like that?

Wolfiefan your dogs nose actually very similar.

The histiocytoma was on her hindquarters. I didn't spot it until I was cuddling her one day and found a warty, raised spot.

Trampire · 23/12/2017 18:28

Yeah, it's definitely not raised in the slightest or warty/bumpy at all.

They start out smooth and pale

Veterinari thanks. Today it seems to have formed a 'crust' and is darker. It's probably what it is. Will have to wait until after Christmas now to go back to the Vets.
