Just caught the little --shit-- darling cocking his leg against yet another beanbag!! We had 2, now we have none! He’s pissed on the sofa before now. And is constantly doing it in his own bed!! I’m at my wits end. We love this little guy so much but need this to stop! Any suggestions, PLEASE, before I stitch up his thingy!!

Following! I have a Dachshund who is over 7 months and literally does not care where he goes,as soon as you turn your back, there he goes! It's doing my head in. Any advice greatly appreciated (sorry no help!).

laudanum · 19/12/2017 11:59

Is he neutered?

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 19/12/2017 12:01

Apologies if you are already doing this, but going back to absolute toilet training basics is best...so being taken outside to toilet on the hour, every hour and tons of praise and reward when they do go outside. Not fun at this time of year I know!
Also, what are you using to clean any messes? is it a proper urine cleaner because otherwise the dog still smell it and want to mark it.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 19/12/2017 12:04

PS @han01uk I'm afraid Dachsies can be notoriously hard to toilet train - stay constant and vigilant!

laudanum · 19/12/2017 12:11

My rule was to take my pup out every thirty minutes and wait for him to wee, and then shower him with tons of praise and treats with every elimination.

My other tactic was to crate him if he pissed on something indoors. I would loudly exclaim NO, and crate him immediately, ignoring any sounds of OUTRAGE. He's probably pushing boundaries. FWIW, my dog is half Akita and they are stubborn bastards too.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 19/12/2017 12:28

You really shouldn't be using the crate for punishment...it's literally the opposite of what to be doing with it.

bigsighall · 19/12/2017 12:31

Is he marking rather than weeing? Is he snipped?

han01uk · 19/12/2017 12:41

Agree Hodge. Crates are supposed to be "their" space, for sleeping and feeling safe. We don't crate anymore but certainly wouldn't use it as punishment. If I catch him I say a firm "No". If it's already done there is absolutely no point in reprimanding as they have no idea what they are being told off for. We do use a command, ours is "toilet time" and he will go on command outside now,but is still having little ones inside as soon as I turn my back. Back to basics again I guess....

Fishwifey · 19/12/2017 12:41

Also a dachshund!! Damn these cute Sausage bastards! I wash his bed in our usual laundry detergent. I’m using either flash or bleach on the floor. He keeps shutting under my Christmas tree too!
He uses the puppy mats I leave down, and will do in the garden when I take him out there. Just seems to enjoy pissing on soft furnishings!

Fishwifey · 19/12/2017 12:42

*shitting not shutting, but you probably guessed that!

Fishwifey · 19/12/2017 12:42

No not snipped. Can be bad news for their backs

Wolfiefan · 19/12/2017 12:44

Ditch the puppy mats. They are confusing
Back to basics I'm afraid. Take him out more frequently on lead. Praise for doing it outside. Get enzyme cleaner not bleach.

han01uk · 19/12/2017 12:44

Can it fish? I didn't know that. I was counting down the months to get him done!

han01uk · 19/12/2017 12:47

I also leave mats down in the kitchen, where he is now confined unless we are with him,but also heard advice about just ditching them. . Learnt the hard way now he has literally ruined our new carpet! Should have been a lot less trusting when we first got him!

Thanks,interesting to know.

Wolfiefan · 19/12/2017 12:54

It's not the fault of the dog. They haven't learnt to go outside yet. Ditch the pads. They teach the dog it's ok to go inside.
Take dog out after eating and drinking and playing and napping and every half an hour. On lead. Praise if pup goes. If not then back out in a few minutes.
Watch pup like a hawk.
Remember accidents are down to you not seeing the signs. It's not the puppy being naughty. They don't understand.

katmarie · 19/12/2017 13:05

We thought we'd cracked it with our puppy but then at 5 months she regressed and started peeing indoors again (on the tiles floor thank goodness) so we went back to basics. Watched her like a hawk, kept her close to one of us at all times, took her out every 45 minutes - hour, immediately after coming out of her crate and straight after food, and lots of fuss and treats when she went. It took about a week for us of doing that, and she's back in the swing of things now. It's rubbish but I think it's the most effective way. I even had her on a long lead tied to me for a couple of days so she couldnt sneak off and wee somewhere, because she was like a ninja for going when you weren't looking!

Fishwifey · 19/12/2017 13:08

The problem is, I’m not home 24-7. He'll be alone for a couple of hours a day and he will always have done it in his bed by the time I get back

as the others said, ditch the pads and immediately invest in some proper cleaner. I recommend:

han01uk · 19/12/2017 13:19

I've been with mine all morning, out to toilet ok. I have just gone up to hang washing and he has done 4 ginormous wees and a poo 😡

Wolfiefan · 19/12/2017 13:21

Watching a puppy and being consistent is the only solution. If he doesn't know he isn't to do it inside then you can't expect him to hold it whilst you're out. Why do you have to leave him? Can someone else watch him?

Fishwifey · 19/12/2017 13:29

Because I can’t take him to supermarkets etc!
