How to tell if dog is ill / needs to go to the vet?

This is probably a daft question but I’d be grateful for advice from more experienced dog owners than me! 7 year old dog, wouldn’t settle last night, previously when she wouldn’t go in her crate this meant she has a bad stomach and didn’t want to be shut away. She didn’t need to go out overnight but stayed in her daybed and now doesn’t want to get up or eat, tail not wagging as usual but otherwise bright eyed and pleased to see me. Nothing visibly wrong with her, it’s only been since last night so I’m not about to rush to the vets but is there any guidance on how long to wait? She can be picky about food and has been known to not eat until very late in a day, missing a meal. How can you tell when your dog is ill enough to need the vet? If she was human you’d think, oh well a virus and if not better in a few days I might see the GP!

I think earlier rather than later bearing in mind that Christmas is looming. I'm usually quite cautious but if I'm in doubt on a Wednesday I may leave it overnight, but on a Friday I'd prefer to go in case anything wrong with weekend looming. But this was posted earlier - hope she's now OK!

What kind of dog is she? Back pain can cause similar syptoms in some breeds. I agree with Mitchellmummy- I'd get her checked out sooner rather than later. I'm a vet, and we are suddenly inundated with things that are now "urgent" now that everyone has done their Christmas shopping
