Puppy worms - so upset

We've had our 11 week old JRT pup for 3 weeks. We took him to the vet the day we collected him - clean bill of health and advised to continue with the wormer the breeder had been giving him.

A few worms to be seen a week or so ago. All ok, we thought. Shows the wormer is working.

This morning I discovered about 15 worms which he passed without poo. I was heartbroken. They were large and long and just looked so horrific. He then passed a lot of a jelly like substance. A few more pops followed containing worms.

Took him to vet immediately and we are to give him Panacur over next few days. She said he is about a 1 in 30 case (i.e. Quite severe case). she thinks he has as many as 45-50 worms inside him.

I'm just devastated and feel like I've failed him. He is the happiest, calmest soul imaginable, has loved to play, constantly wagging his tail. To think he has been in such pain and discomfort has really upset me.

Told to expect them to start coming out over next couple of days. I do hope so. We are going to be with him round the clock (haven't left him at all yet anyway and he's still sleeping in a crate in our bedroom with a box attached with pads laid to do business on but I do take him out in the middle of the night.

Does anyone have any experience of this? How long did it take to clear? Anything I should expect or prepare for? Just want my beautiful boy to be better.

Roundworms which it sounds like you are describing are really normal in puppies. There is a particular roundworm that forms a cyst in the muscle of dogs and gets 'woken' up in pregnancy. They cross the placenta and pass in mother's milk too. The wormer will kill them.

I got a pup and he had awful worms. The breaded clearly didn't de worm. We had to worm him with the pink liquid. They came out over 24-48 hours it was VILE. I had to sleep downstairs with him to keep letting him out and to clear up. Just stick with it it will be over soon And wash your hands a lot.

I'm just devastated and feel like I've failed him you haven't failed him as you got him the treatment he needs. It's horrible to think they are unwell but the new wormer will do its stuff.

THank you so much for your encouraging words, so appreciated. It's just horrible seeing them suffer isn't it. I am absolutely willing them to come out as soon as possible so I will be keeping a close eye. Thanks again Flowers

Panacur is what my pups breeder used and told me to use. It is apparently very gentle but remorseless and does a great job of clearing them out!

Thank you! So pleased to hear that. Come

Hello, me again, 18 hours later and he's only passed one smallish dead worm with last nights' poo. Poos this morning haven't contained worms.

When is this likely to get going?! Everything I read say that stuff starts happening fairly immediately. Am I jumping the gun?! Could it be that he passed all the dead worms yesterday and his tummy is still bloated or is that not how it works? Obviously vet knows best but she was fairly horrid if I'm honest, very intimidating and I'm not a nervous person! Now we're wondering if she tried to scare us into being extra vigilant? Prob a daft suggestion and I'm probably being impatient

Keep going with the Panacur for the full course. There may or may not be any live worms left.

I'd consider another vet if you don't like the current one. Unfortunately you'll probably see them fairly regularly. If you feel intimidated that's not good. Vets are not omniscient and there will usually be options. You're paying a lot of money to see them so it's important you feel listened to.

Both partners at my vet are lovely - always up for a cuddle with the pup and he loves them. Nothing of course to do with the jars of treats around the place....

I echo the advice above. You are paying for private pet care so if you feel uncomfortable with your vet I would go somewhere else. You don't need a reason to swop practices so you can just register at a new one.

All of our vets at my practice have taken the time to talk to me and explain in great detail about his health and treatment. You should not be intimidated so either ask for a different vet if they have multiple ones or swop practices.
