Umbilical Hernia

Were due to pick up our puppy in the next few weeks and the breeder has told us that the dog has a small lump on its tummy and after taking her to the vets its been confirmed as an umbilical hernia. He did go into the the whole biting off of the umbilical cord Shock

Should we be concerned about this? I have googled and most people seem to think its no biggy but any personal experiences anyone?

I would talk to your own local vet and get their opinion on what it means and if there are any possible complications later on. I know absolutely nothing about the condition but what would worry me is things like pet insurance as this would now be a pre existing condition for a new policy so I would definitely want to know the implications of having one would be.

I am sure I seen on a vet programme it can cause problems but I am not 100% sure. Do you have a local vet you could go into to ask advice. Some pets at home a have a vet( we have our dog with them for treatment) they are so helpful. It might be worth speaking to them

What breed is it? As this type of hernia is most likely a heredity condition. (Even though your breeder may not want to admit to it.)
Depending on size it's ok and won't be harmful to the puppy. However, you would have to keep an eye on it in case it gets bigger or hard. At which point a small operation to close the hole is recommended. Otherwise, your vets should close it when dog gets neutered to be on the safe side.
I'm my eyes, the breeder should give you a discount for the cost of the operation. If nothing else, to ensure, you have the funds to give pup the OP if needed.

One of our terriers had a small umbilical hernia his whole life. It was tiny mind but some vets would still offer to sort it out when they spotted it. I never took them up on it and he lived quite happily to 16 years with it.

An umbilical hernia has the potential to be something that will need surgery, and if you are not prepared for that expense I would pass on the puppy. I would not breed from it either, it can be hereditary.

Thankyou for the replies
She's a labradoodle and we don't intend to breed from her, after speaking to the vets as suggested they will do a first check at her injections and repeat the checks when ever we go for boosters with a mind to fixing it when we have her spayed

One of my shih tzus has this, the vet found it at his first vet check. It has never been an issue. It feels like a little hole about 1.5cm but the vet said several times it has sealed it's self inside with a layer of fat and is unlikely to ever be a problem. Smile

They can put a stitch in, I was offered this at the same time as neutering him but didn't bother as the vet seemed to be very sure he'd be fine, he's 8 1/2 and is fine

I would find out how big it is before vommiting to the dog. Maybe speak to the vet that saw the puppy too, just so you are getting direct professional advice Smile
