Dog refusing to get in crate

We moved the dogs crate at the weekend and now she's refusing to get in it. She's 9 months old and we've had her 7 months. She's been in the crate since the 1st night and we've never had any problems before. She goes in there at night and if we are going out for longer than an hour. The crate was in an open space under the stairs and has been turned round 45 degrees, so she's now using a different door to enter it. Do I just need to patient? Hate seeing her so sad 😞

Throw a handful of treats in first or get her playing with a favourite toy which you could "accidentally" throw in so she follows it?

Also check in case she's had a wee in there! My dog refused to get in hers a few weeks ago, when I had a feel around it was a bit damp so either she or mums dog had weed in there

Thank you both. I tried the treat thing, she ran in to get it then ran straight out lol I will persevere!

Try just leaving the crate door open and keep popping in favourite toys, treats etc, might help

It's always a good idea to do crate training if you get a new crate or move the old one. Your dog is young and is either approaching puberty or is already going through it, so a lot of things familiar seem scary all of a sudden. It's good to create a positive association with the crate and praise her abundantly when she goes in it.

Is there the potential to turn it more gradually? A few degrees at a time, until she is used to it?
Or put it back the old way but use the other door.

She needs to get used to it being every which way round. Stay patient- she'll hate it more if you push her in! Put her dinner in there, so she stays in it for a while.

Leave the door open so she knows it's a nice place to go and not one of fear. Throw some treats in and praise her when she gets in and give her another treat. Keep doing it and she will associate the crate with treats and will happily go in.

I second the idea of adjusting it gradually.

ShovellerDuck · 17/12/2017 20:53

Why do you use a crate? Unless your dog is destructive you don’t need it.

It's very helpful for a dog to be comfortable with a crate. It makes holidaying easier, and ensures their safety when there may be hazards about especially at this time of the year! We've put presents under the tree, and we don't know what some of them contain. I wouldn't want to leave mine unsupervised in case he decided to f8nd out!

My dog loves his crate - we stopped actually shutting it at an early stage, but it was his sleeping place of choice for many years. We've since moved house so no longer have it up, but we take it with us on holiday and he goes straight to it at night - it's like a portable piece of home for him.
