Really don't want to rehome.

Hi,

Don't know where to start really, DH wanted a dog so in April after months of looking we got our puppy. Toilet training went quite well but everything else has been an absolute nightmare.

DH has now decided he doesn't want dog anymore. Dog has chewed his way through most of my house and bit my son and DH on numerous occasions.

I didn't want a dog, but have grown quite fond of him. I don't think it's fair just rehoming him when he seems to have a behavioural problem, DH has now said if I want to keep him then he's my responsibility not his. I work full time, DH part time. I don't think I have the energy to do this myself.

Is there any tips or training techniques you can share so I can make this work? I'm at my wits end.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update.

Spoke to DH who has agreed to starting training classes (our nearest start in January) he's also agreed to split the walks. 3 each a week and together on a Sunday.

I'm relieved, glad that I won't be doing this on my own and hopefully this is just a phase and will pass in time.

Thanks for all your advice. It was much appreciated.

Great news MrsWineasaurus! Good on you both. I forgot to mention it yesterday but the puppy survival thread on here is good!

I was on that thread when we first got DDog but then a new thread was made and I couldn't find it! X

Fantastic plan. Great news. Good luck.

Glad to hear you are sorting the training out.
I have had many Jack Russells and they are not low maintenance dogs. So much energy! Only thing with more energy than a terrier is a terrier puppy Grin

They do grow into amazing characters though so don't give up!

PestDog is a JRT cross too. If he goes more than a day without being walked to the point of exhaustion then he's an absolute arsehole.

He's also on his fourth home in approx 18 months.... once I started giving him enough exercise everyone, including occasional visitors, have commented on how it's like having a different dog around.

Does he chase balls? I find that on days when I'm short of time / daylight it's the most efficient way to knock the physical energy out of him. We're still talking 45 mins of non stop (2 balls, rapid refire, he's very good at returning and dropping the ball, so genuinely non stop) ball throwing with a launcher plus time to / from the park, but it works on weekdays in the winter (weekend walks contain more mental simulation of sniffing, meeting other dogs, etc that just isn't possible after dark). If he chases but doesn't bring it back / drop it, that's something to train him on so you can use the technique

And training classes. Always go to training classes - I find them quite fun, but 80% of the improvement in behaviour is down to exercise.
