Favourite training treats?

PestDog is currently in the process of learning a lot of basic obedience because we had to start from the ground up. As such, he's getting through a lot of treats

We're currently using these, which are great because they're meaty, apparently delicious and can be broken into small bits for training www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B011RP8DKA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8 However, as he's got through 333g / £17 worth (inc. P&P) in just over 2 months, I'm sure there must be a better value option

What I need is

  • something that doesn't look too much like meat (I'm a veggie, and would prefer not to have to think about it too much Blush)
  • ideally made from offal on the basis that it's a waste product from the meat industry rather than requiring animals to be reared specifically for it (see above)
  • not full of shite
  • sensibly priced
  • delicious
  • comes in small bits / can easily be broken up
  • doesn't need refrigeration or similar

Actually I think what I really need is dehydrated bits of offal at a more suitable price Grin

Any suggestions?

I use dried lambs lung. Pup adores it, it's low calorie and it's very cheap. I get it from the local dog training club but this looks similar

I'm afraid that that is a pretty good price for a pure meat treat that you don't have to break up (I've found better prices for giant sheets of dried tripe but can't face cutting it up).

I rotate high value treats so that no one knows what they might get - dried sprats (disgusting, but the dogs adore them and the fish oil is great for them), dried liver or similar from Treats2sit4, cocktail sausages (precooked from Lidl) or chorizo. Which doesn't help you much I'm afraid.
A friend uses primula spread straight from the tube. Mine are unimpressed, but might be worth a try?

You're not going to like this but I dehydrate my own!
Is there a non veggie in the house who could do this? I bought a dehydrator. Do liver or lung or heart. It's cheap and you can break them into tiny bits. Keeps for ages. And isn't unpleasant to handle.
If it would bother you then best to set it going outside in a shed or utility.
