Dog walking coat

We live rurally in the North. It is freezing at the moment and often windy (as you'd expect in Nov). I need a puffer style 3/4 length coat, with zipped pockets but importantly a hood that stays up.
I've tried my sisters McMurdo North face coat and while it does keep me very warm the hood blows down at the slightest breeze as there's no pull cord or stiff kind of mouldable rim around it. Plain gortex coats don't have the padding to keep me warm.
I'll pay a couple of hundred quid or a bit more. I just need the warmth, bit of length so mid thigh plus reliable hood that stays up for dog walking on the windy moors.

I saw the thread title and was about to recommend Equafleece

I'll get my coat

I’d go and look in a good farming or equestrian stockist but I wouldn’t go too warm as you do get hot when you walk even when it’s cold . As for hats I wear a separate hat , at the moment I wear a woolly peaked cap .

Heratnumber7 · 27/11/2017 12:29

Bobble hat?? One of those ones with ear flaps.

EthelOnTheTown · 27/11/2017 12:33

Yes I do have a hat, it's just those when it starts chucking it down a hood that stays up would be handy. I have a gortex with a fab hood that doesn't budge, but puffers always seem to have big waffy hoods.
I'll keep looking.

I have a 3/4 length puffer from GAP that comes to my knees. It's down filled and incredibly warm. Proper zip, deep pockets and a good hood with toggles on the side you can tighten so it stays up.

My mum also gets similar coats from Lands End so might be worth having a look at their website too.

Cammymyle · 27/11/2017 12:39

I got that type of coat a few years ago from Landsend. Have a look. The hood is really cosy and has a pull cord.

The pockets aren't zipped, but they do have a press stud which is better than nothing.

EthelOnTheTown · 27/11/2017 12:41

I'll have a look at Gap thanks synec , toggles to keep it up sound perfect.

I have the Rab in a different colour & I took the fur off. The hood doesn’t have a toggle, but rarely blows down & with a hat on it’s nigh on impossible. The inner cuffs are genius, no cold wind blowing up your sleeves.

However, if I had the budget, I’d go for the fjallraven one, it’s perfect, just ££££.
I think £385 😳

I bought a seasalt coat in outlet. Maybe a bit long but warm.
I also bought sealskinz waterproof gloves and baseball cap type hat. I am on the look out for a waterproof hat with a full brim too but at least the cap keeps the rain off my glasses.
Now I need a new thigh length, properly waterproof but light layer! All the ones I have seen are too short.

Synecdoche · 27/11/2017 13:04

No problem - I think it's closest to this one: www.gap.co.uk/browse/product.do?cid=1090885&pcid=1090885&vid=1&pid=000842884001

My mum has this one which also has toggles on the hood apparently:

This one also looks extra warm:

Pippin8 · 27/11/2017 14:45

Actually, I’ve just discovered the rab does have toggles on the hood.

DeepfriedPizza · 27/11/2017 14:51

I have this
www.mountainwarehouse.com/aurora-womens-down-jacket-p15082.aspx/grey/

It doesn't meet any of your requirements Grin but I love it
The pockets and front flap are magnetic. There are 4 pockets so two with flaps and two that you slide into from the side. The fur is detachable. The hood stays up and I have a massive head so I often can't find hoods that cover my whole head.

Also, I attached all my fridge magnets to the front one day...hours of fun

I came on to suggest equafleece too!! We'd look funny wearing coats the same as our dogs! I have a north face arctic parka which I've had for 3 or 4 years. Really warm and quite long so that with wellies is perfect for dog walking. I use the hood of raining and don't find it blows down although i am
Contemplating getting a hat.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/11/2017 18:08

I’ve got this from Tog24. I found it online. It’s perfect. It matches all your requirements. It’s so lovely that two people I know admired it and went and bought their own. It’s warm, windproof and showerproof, zip pockets, one pocket inside, a proper hood that stays up and keep the rain off and the fur is detachable, and it’s also really lightweight so it doesn’t feel like you’re weighed down by your own coat. It comes down to my knees and when I’ve got my wellies on I’m nearly all covered. I love it.
