Recall.....success!!!

Hi all, I've had 2 posts on here about recall and training my pup, trigger. He's 6 months old today and do you know what, I THINK we may have it cracked....although I know there'll be times he just goes.
I've taken advice from on here, I bough the book, "total recall" and I've tried all sorts. We've been training using a very long line for weeks, and I think it's paid off.
Today we spent a good 35/40 minutes off lead on a huge field.
He ran off to play with other dogs, but he watched to see where I was. I stayed calm, and said ' cmon this way' AND HE CAME!!
If he seems to be not listening I say "bye then" AND HE COMES!! I walk away from him rather than chase after him,,...that takes balls of steel.
But basically he stayed near to me, even when playing he came back withoutme asking him to.
My secret weapon is a bag of cooked chicken and ham. Today that was his breakfast, and we both had an awesome time.
In the past even if he's come back he won't let me put the lead on, so we've practiced that with him coming back, sitting and eating chicken whilst lead goes on.
I am so so proud of him, and also me, I did this. I put all this work in.
But mostly I want to thanks all of you, for the advice, the "it will come!" Advice and the helpful ideas.
THANKYOU wise mumsnetters Flowers
I feel like we can achieve so much now, hopefully he can make lots of new friends.

I love reading posts like this which show there is light at the end of the tunnel, well done.

Boopup is nearly 5 months and wants to greet everyone and every dog he meets so I put him on the lead unless we are alone. Anyway, today I hadn’t noticed some other dogs coming the other way when he was off lead but he astounded me by coming back after a quick sniff. I think it helped that they weren’t too interested in him but it made me realise that one day we should be able to go for a lovely gentle walk without being on high alert for distractions all the time.

Boo that's what I was like if I ever felt brave enough to let him off, I'd be on guard the whole time for other dogs/ people/ runners(!)
I think the long line has worked wonders, as I was getting to the stage of not really being on the other end, but it being within reach iyswim.
Today he met a new dog on the field and ran off with him, but I stayed calm (!) called him and said "this way trigger" and he did come back, and sat, and let me put the lead on.
I'm gobsmacked if I'm honest. It's like he's secretly been reading up on what to do!
I thought he'd be on a lead forever.

It's all down to people on here giving calm and consistent advice, and me knowing ( despite being sniggered at) that the long line, would, in the end prove worth it.
Good luck!
