So excited (and nervous, are we MAD!)

fostering a gorgeous spaniel, we've all fallen in love, especially teenage son, and he (dog) is just LOVELY, LOVELY, LOVELY. (ok son is lovely too, but he is already mine Grin)

we've never owned a dog before, always thought it was too much work, too expensive.
But started fostering as I like getting out for a walk. really enjoyed it, decided that I want a dog for me, as I love waling them. Every time a dog left the kids said - when is the next one coming?

Spaniel arrived last week. 12 hours and we were all in love. I think we all felt he was ours.
Not without issues (see my thread on weeing dog) but dh came in from his run this morning and said - let's do it.

Just texted rescue and asked to adopt him. They said yes!

I REALLY wanted to surprise kids as a present, but dh rightly said no, we all have to be on board before we make the decision, family meeting tonight. Kids need to commit to training, playing with him, coming out at weekends for the occasional walk etc.

So many things I don't know about dogs eeeek!

I need a thread of questions, trouble is, I don't know what some of the questions are, let alone the answers!

So - top 2 things you think every new dog owner should know?

He's beautiful! We have a blue roan Cocker who the breeder named Gino after the Chef when he was in I'm a Celebrity. It does really suit the bouncy nature of spaniels. Our previous cocker was called Arthur which we all still love!

Chasingsquirrels · 23/11/2017 17:09

I like Scout.

(I also liked Pepper & Pebble for ours, but the DS's said they were girls named and vetoed them.)

yawning801 · 23/11/2017 17:20

What about Bounce? Quite fitting for a springer!

user1497997754 · 23/11/2017 18:07

Oh lovely user.

(faints at the thought of the addtional mud TWO dogs would bring in!)

Bruno was good - until dh said it should be for a brown dog, and now he has said it, I can't shake that off.

ds won't do scout as dd1 is a scout and very into it, but ds very much isn't.

chasing How about Yeti? That's not a girlie name. Or Bigfoot! Grin. He does look like a pebble though,

user1497997754 · 23/11/2017 18:56

What about Broady

user1497997754 · 23/11/2017 18:57

If he is a Blue Roan spaniel you could call him Blue

user1497997754 · 23/11/2017 18:58

Buster.....

Mightybanhammer · 23/11/2017 19:32

What a beautiful dog. You lucky person!
Bertie - 2 syllable names are much easier to call if that helps persuade the family
Bobby / bob my favourite dog name
Basil. A few times I met a very brave springer of this name who had served in Afghanistan as a sniffy dog and is now retired with his handler and an adored companion.

Pip/piper

William/will

Sam

Ben

George

My advice- don't rush into a decision. He has a name which will do for now, but change it by all means.

Chasingsquirrels · 23/11/2017 19:57

Our blue roan cocker has a name - he is Charlie (ds1 who I didn't know was that bothered about a dog, once we decided to get one has named him, thinks it's his dog and is sleeping in his room - no).
I liked Blue as well but they both vetoed that too.

BeachysFlipFlops · 24/11/2017 17:41

Dylan?

steppemum · 24/11/2017 18:08

So. I have made a list of 53 names.
I am happy with ANY of them (Hamish is current fav, Dylan is on there)

The rest of the family now need to chose or else find one of their own.
Dh keeps trying names out on him, he likes Nelson and Watson. dds hate both.

This may take some time.....

53 names?!!! so funny. Good luck with that OP. Do you know what? I'd go with Rover if I were you Grin

Or maybe just Beanz

Minster2012 · 24/11/2017 19:36

Our lovely cockerpoo is Dylan.. it’s not fluffy or silly or old or young it’s just a good name! My DH is happy shouting it (he works the shooting season) so it couldn’t be a fluffy or silly name) & had to age well & it works!

Minster2012 · 24/11/2017 19:37

We considered Scout, but you can’t really shout “out Scout!”

steppemum · 27/11/2017 13:29

Morning all.
I am banging my head on a table over names, as NO-ONE can agree.

serioulsy, it was easier (much, much easier) naming our kids.
We get to 4/5 like it and the last person says NO WAY.

I may be about to make an executive decision here.

Twitter - I think Rover it may be.

On a positive note, we left ddog and ds alone together all day Sunday, and ds walked him and cuddled him and fed him, and remembered to take him out for a wee.

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 27/11/2017 15:05

I think the person that will care and walk it the most should have the final say Grin

steppemum · 29/11/2017 22:07

He has a name.
He is Oscar.
Definitely not my fav, but it suits him and everyone liked it.
I do have a hesitation in that it is not remotley like Buddy, so may be hard to change, but he mostly comes to 'Come!' rather than his name, so it should be fine.

He feels like he is mine now Grin

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 29/11/2017 22:27

Congratulations!
Oscar is a lovely name.

picklemepopcorn · 29/11/2017 23:18

On the dangerous foods list, one that is often less well known is sweeteners. Particularly problematic if your dog steals a packet of chewing gum or cheap cupcakes... and occasionally found in peanut butter.

Get an aquazorb grooming towel. It isn't expensive, and makes rubbing down after a mucky walk much easier.

Pasithea · 29/11/2017 23:53

Congratulations. I have two rescued springers. Hard work especially in winter but I wouldnt be without them.
