Anyone brought their dog from Africa to the UK?

Not so much about logistics, but interested to people's experience of bringing your 'local dog' from East Africa to the UK, and how did they adapt?
We live in Uganda and will return to UK mid next year. We were gifted a rescue dog who has very quickly become a member of our family and is my shadow!
I'd like to bring her with us to UK (dog is for life etc etc) but have minor concerns about how she would adapt.
For example, here she lives outside most of the time, wanders between 3 gardens in a big compound where somebody is always around. Here it's always hot. Back in UK we have a big garden, and I work part time/from home, but life is less communal. She doesn't socialise much with other dogs here as we are urban and there's a rabies risk from strays. She has a lovely temper though.
Would love to hear any experiences or thoughts!
Thanks

No direct experience, but if I was you I'd start trying to bring her inside more, take her out for walks on the lead, and perhaps meet up with other people who have dogs for the sake of socialisation... Basically try and gradually shift her life to being more like it will be in the UK now

Years ago I knew someone who brought her dog to the UK from Zimbabwe when she returned, and he was a dream dog despite living in an urban flat in the UK - but I'm also not sure what his lifestyle was like in Zimbabwe

Thanks, good idea about mimicking life in UK here first. She does spend a lot of time in my house but door always open. She's fine on lead but was scared of traffic. Then barked at a roadside goat which brought out a big gang of loose neighbourhood dogs!
Will try driving to some dog-friendly cafes and try doggy meet-ups with friends.

Anyone brought a dog to the UK who didn't cope well? Or any coping strategies to share? Smile

Not Africa but I brought a "village outside dog" back from Greece who had belonged to me for a couple of years in Greece (after being dumped by someone else in the village). When she first came to live with me she lived outside in an olive barrel comfy home and roamed free - later she had to be tethered so she didn't get into trouble with a difficult neighbour (her previous owner, it turned out, who threatened to kill her). Eventually she came to live in the house at night (weather worsened). She liked being indoors but still wanted to roam (she always had so she didn't see why she shouldn't go off for 2 hours at a time and would slip out if not kept an eye on). After about 3 years I had to bring her to UK and she LOVED IT. She loved the cooler weather, she liked to lie outside and gaze at the neighbours but liked the comforts of home too and, being a bright girl, soon accepted she wasn't allowed to slope off for a walk on her own. I think your dog will adjust and just be glad she is with you, her family, but the dog socialising thing before you leave is a very good idea.

That's a great story, and I think you're right joyful . There's pros and cons of bringing her but I think she would adapt like your dog did. At the end of the day she had a tough early life and pretty much likes to just be with us...so guess that's the main thing to keep her happy.
