Sproodle vs Airedale

Hi, looking for some advice please. We are looking to get our first family pet. I really love spaniels but DH is not so keen on their looks and would prefer a low shedding dog so we are thinking about a sproodle or an Airedale as a compromise. Trying to get some ideas of which breed would suit us best and wondered if anyone could help. I know there's a wide variety with the sproodle she as to whether they favour the poodle or springer side but my questions are:
How well do these two breeds tolerate being alone? There are 2 days a week when no one will be home for 6-10 hours although the dog would be walked before and after work. Would we need to have a dog sitter/walker come for those days?
How much exercise on average do you find your dog needs?
Any health problems?
How do they get on with children. We have DS (nearly 5) and I've read that both breeds are great with kids.
Are they good dogs for first time owners? DH had dogs as a child but we've never owned one as adults. I like the idea of going to classes and possibly even getting into agility or fly ball.
Thanks!

We have an Airedale puppy, she is our second airedale. They are not first time dog owner suitable generally. I love them but a puppy airedale can be destructive, disobedient and just plain ornery!
They are not suitable to be left for 6- 10 hours - they will become bored and destructive.
They are amazing beautiful dogs and I wouldn't have any other dog now but we are relatively experienced dog owners having had several rescue dogs and having fostered for dogs trust - our previous airedale was our first puppy from a breeder. They do have a very high percentage of hip dysplasia - our last dale had both hips replaced at a cost of thousands ( I nsured but didnt quite cover the cost as first hip was £8000!!)
Grooming costs can be high £50 upwards several times a year, insurance is £30+ per month for a decent life time policy,
We also have a Labrador who was a complete doddle in puppyhood compared to an Airedale but Jesus the hair!!!😁

Although i have to say mist people would have said we were mad to get Sammy - had a poorly with extra needs 1 yr old, a 3 yr old and a 7 yr old - complete and utter madness lol however it's been a major loss to our family when he died in June age 12 1/2 yrs.
Definitely not an easy dog to own but an experience I will never forget

Here is Honey.

Oh the ears!!
Gorgeous. But yes. Not an easy breed.

ProfessorCat · 17/11/2017 19:28

Ahh sorry, I mistook your post completely!

I absolutely agree. Malamutes are BLOODY HARD dogs to own. They're working dogs and not suitable for most dog owners.

Airedales are similar in terms of suitability tbh. Beautiful dogs, hard work.

Professor - that’s ok we are cool.

I’m constantly staggered by the ignorance of dog owners. My dog plays in the park with a young collie - who has no recall and I owned by a lady with bad hips who can’t run after it - she bought him as a puppy. Waiting to be hit by a car at the very least!

Sad

AuntieMay that picture is not helping out people off getting an Airedale, now is it? Beautiful!!

Still think a greyhound though ....

confuzzled42 · 17/11/2017 20:41

Put people off - stupid autocorrect

AuntieMay · 17/11/2017 20:45

Sorry for not putting people off - does this one help?

Sproodle vs Airedale
Wolfiefan · 17/11/2017 20:59

No. It really doesn't!! Too cute. That's the danger though. A breed totally unsuited to our life and family. But too gorgeous for words!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 17/11/2017 21:00

Auntie what a gorgeous teddy bear dog Grin

AuntieMay · 17/11/2017 21:09

SORRY
I actually mean that as I really wouldn't want anyone unsuited to an Airedale getting one, they are so gorgeous, intelligent and loving BUT can be absolute devil dogs so so naughty - the list of stuff chewed by Sammy and Honey is huge, you have to be prepared for chewing - we have replaced 7 sky remotes over the last 10 years, numerous pairs of shoes, a bottom step and a highchair seat ! Amongst other things
So many dogs, so many choices - it comes down to researching a breed, visiting that breed, taking time to decide that that breed is right for you

Wolfiefan · 17/11/2017 21:12

Great advice Auntie. I knew a stunning Airedale growing up. Gorgeous. Just not right for us.
Consider breed traits.
Do your HW.
Be realistic.
Be prepared to wait.
