Greyhound and separation anxiety

I have a 10 year old rescued greyhound who has always been a very sensitive soul. He used to have separation anxiety many years ago which we worked on and then we got another greyhound who we lost a couple of months ago. Since then our dog has reverted back to weeing sometimes when we leave him. He can have just been out for a walk or in the garden but still does it. He is also quite often getting up at 4 in the morning wanting a wee. He has always had a ritual of going out for a wee before eating and during eating so I have to make sure his food is not left when we are not there. He has never liked change. The thing is we are going on holiday next month and he is going to stay with my sister (where he usually goes) but I am worried he will not be clean in her house. She has said she will put him in the kitchen when she goes out which will be easy to clean but I'm wondering if a crate would help. I've never used one before though I've had rescued greys for twenty odd years. I don't know whether he would be too old for one now and if it would help. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you can borrow a crate from someone, it would be worth giving it a try. If he was a racer, then he'd have been very used to being crated, and hopefully he might remember just settling down and snoring in it. I crate my lurchers, and with a nice thick bed and a chew they are very happy to be left in it

Unfortunately I don't know anyone I can borrow a crate from so I would have to buy and he's quite a big lad. He didn't actually race (too slow) so hasn't been in a crate for a long time. It's the only thing I can think of though and I would need to buy soon to get him settled before we go away.

Solution sounds like he needs another companion op.

Some vets lend out crates OP. But don't base his acceptance of the crate on a history years back, it might bite you on the ass. If you're going to crate train, start from scratch.

Tbh sounds like a companion would be best, if you can. Greyhounds from ex racing backgrounds are so used to having other greys around them, constant bustle etc even if they are kenneled alone. You have reinforced that (i don't mean that negatively) by having two at home so again they are not alone.

I agree about the companion even though this dog was always a bit of a loner and didn't act very keen towards the other one but he was still company for him. I would like another dog but am not sure we can afford it now and not sure if he would accept another.

Could you maybe take another Grey as a foster perhaps?

TomYumSoup · 15/11/2017 11:36

Ha that's how I ended up with two. He came for a couple of days as was an ex racer left tied to a fence when he couldn't race anymore but the rescue had no space for him, then we had him over 6 years. I have just messaged our vets to ask about lending a crate though it's a v small practice but I'm hoping they might know someone who will.

Oops haha. That is how I ended up with my last two dogs too...one an ex Rommie who everyone called a PiTA, and then when he passed an elderly Staff with severe health problems. The neediest ones grab your heart the most.

Could you maybe put a shout out amongst the rescue for a crate if no good via the vet? I know our rescue network always has crates available

sonjadog · 15/11/2017 20:26

Do you have a second hand market where you live or online? I've bought dog crates very cheaply second hand - there are lots for sale, in my experience.

What about volunteering to walk ddogs for a greyhound rescue and if he forms any attachments you could have one of trial?
