Why does new puppy pee as soon as we come inside?

I'm tired and want to go to bed. I got a new puppy this morning. First few weeks were outside, but now he keeps starting to wee in the house. I say no, take him outside, wander about... nothing. Go back in 20mins later, he starts to wee. I grab him, take him out, nothing... repeat for 2 hours. I need him to wee so I can go to bed. Instead he's trying to sleep on the patio. Help!

Just try taking him out more often and stay out there for as long as it takes for him to wee. It’s a pain in the arse, I know, but it won’t take long once he’s got the idea.

Oh I’ve just read your post properly. You got him this morning and you’re puzzled as to why he won’t wee outdoors? It can take weeks! Did you do any research into dogs before you got this one? Is he your first?

Put him in his crate with a puppy pad next to his bed, and go to sleep fgs

Hopefully pup is settled now and you're both asleep. I'd recommend reading through the various articles on this list in the morning as it seems like some normal aspects of puppy ownership have taken you somewhat by surprise.

One thing; definitely don't tell the puppy off when he has an accident inside. All that will do is make him less likely to want to go in front of you.

No, not my first! and I'm definitely not expecting him to be toilet trained for a while. I was just asking if anyone had any idea why, no matter how long he's outside, he isn't weeing, yet literally wees within seconds of going back inside. I was hoping it was something someone else had encountered, and could offer help with. I wondered if maybe he found outside too stimulating/ scary, if it was something about the feel or smell of the floor etc? From the lack of constructive responses, I assume this isn't a common problem?

When we got our puppy one of the best bits of advice I was given was to go outside with him straight away and stay there (regardless of the weather) until he peed than make a big fuss and tell him what a good boy he is.
We did that and continued to do it when he woke and every twenty minutes after that for about a week (it was hell) he housetrained really quickly. We occasionally get an overnight accident now (poo in kitchen - but it's very rare and usually our fault: food earlier than usual/too much food/walk not late enough in the evening etc).
I doubt your pup is scared, maybe it just thinks it shouldn't pee outside. They can't hold it in for that long so I'd wait until it wakes up, take it outside and don't come in till it wees - repeat all day for a couple of days. By that time hopefully it'll get the message...we also repeated a phrase every time we took it outside. We said 'hurry up' - pretty dumb idea because now when I'm trying to get him to walk quickly (e.g. To catch a bus) I say hurry up and he thinks I want him to pee!

Is it possible he's not been outside before? Did the breeder tell you what they were doing to start toilet training?

He doesn't know he's supposed to pee outside. He's probably only ever peed inside. He thinks he's being a good boy by doing it indoors.

I adopted a dog that was brought up in a home without a garden. He thought it was right to pee on pavement or indoors.

After your pup has had a drink, wait a bit then go outside. Don't pay too much attention, wait til he pees then praise and treat. He will soon get the hang of it, though will still have accidents.

If you think he should need a wee and he doesn't go when you are outside, come back in, but carry him, then when he gets wriggly, take back outside. Repeat until he goes. Then he can play on floor.

Also if you've only had him a day he will need time to explore your garden. My second pup came pretty much housetrained to go outside by breeder but we did have an accident first day home as my, new to him, garden was too interesting and distracted him from doing what he needed to.

My first pup the breeder had housetrained only to puppy pads and newspaper. It was hard to get him to go outside until I put some newspaper and puppy pads down outside. Then gradually started folding them smaller and smaller until they were gone.

I'm a bit puzzled, you say you got him 'this morning' but then say he was going outside for the first few weeks. Do you mean he was going outside at the breeder's house.

If that's the case he might not realise that your outside is the same thing as the breeder's outside and you just need to keep on keeping on until he gets the idea.

Don't be tempted to use puppy pads as you'll have to start all over again training him to go outside and the idea of weeing inside will just be even more entrenched in his mind.

pigs was the puppy pads comment because I mentioned using them outside as my first pups breeder had used them inside and pup wouldn't go outside? Obviously using them outside can't cause an issue of teaching a dog to go inside - it just helped pup grasp that toilet was now outside not indoors on a puppy pad.

Someone upthread suggested the OP put a puppy pad in the crate for the puppy and go to bed. I realise the poster probably suggested that because the OP sounds desperate for sleep, but encouraging a dog to wee in it's crate when you're already having trouble getting it to wee outside and it's weeing in the house didn't sound like a good plan to me.

this happened with our puppy. i remember one day standing outside with him for 1 and a half hours. nothing. walk in the house onto the carpet and wees. I cried.

it's so frustrating and for us we had lots of family and friends on at us as if we were doing something wrong.

2.5 years down the line he wees outside. pooing can be another matter but he is getting better at that.

Ours was petrified of wind still is and i have recently learnt he likes something with a bit of texture to wee / poo on.

Our yard is concrete but the leaves are coming down now and he happily poos and wees on those.

Oh pigs I'd missed that, I though I was the only one who mentioned puppy pads so was when you said that about inside when I was say outside. Oops. Sorry.

Don't panic OP! My Dpup did this for the first couple of weeks...so puzzling. I set a timer for every 30mins & took her out religiously. Every time she woke up too. Totally ignored ANY inside accidents and went overboard with praise when wees were outside. It was rather frustrating but she got it eventually - 5mths & she tells us when she wants to go out now 👍🏻 Good luck!

Oh I see, sorry, I thought you meant you were a novice owner. I think you’re just going to have to stay outside with him. As someone suggested let him have a drink and then grab yourself a warm coat, a comfy seat, a book and a hot drink and settle yourself outside for a while.

Heidi- that's pretty much what I'm trying to do, but after 40 minutes or so I've been giving up... maybe I need more patience.
BLUE- that sounds a good plan, will try that.

I mean, the carrying him inside bit. He's not had puppy pads at the breeders, he slept in a stable with free access to the yard.
Pigs- I meant the first few wees. "Weeks" was autocorrect's contribution!

It is a very common problem.

Puppies will wee in places where they have weed before. So if he has done it inside he is more likely to do it again in the same location.

Unfortunately the only way is to wait longer in the garden to encourage the wee and then reward.

Take a coffee a chair, and get comfy - sit outside and wait. Do not talk to the puppy do not stimulate the puppy. Hopefully they will sniff and shuffle about and eventually wee. Reward.

It is worth cleaning inside the house with specialist enzymne spray that elimates dog odors. Domestic cleaning products can actually make the smell stronger for dogs so then they are more likely to wee in the same spot. You could also use biological washing powder that does the same thing. DO not use dettol, bleach, etc

I think you have to be more patient - first couple of times we had to wait ages... luckily it was dry (and warm)!
