Ive got 2 dogs. One semi long hair and has a double coat, mults a lot and just seems to stink regardless of weather i shampoo him or not. Ive tried the usual tricks - ketchup etc but nothing seems to get rid of the smell and he doesnt enjoy being washed so I try not to stress him out too much.

Second dog is a 4 month old cocker spaniel puppy.

I want to take at least the first, smelly dog to the groomers but im so clueless about what happens and what is what Blush
Ive looked at a few for prices/packages but struggle with whats what/whats included etc.

Really. I want somebody to get rid of the Smell, give him a good all round clean and trim him nails. And possibly the hair on his "chin" as this gets all manky from dipping in his water (as does the hair around his penis from the wee but not sure if I can ask for this to be sorted Hmm) and a good brush/de fur.

What do I need to book? A full groom? I dont want him shaved though. But happy for them to tidy bits up.

Also, what happens if he gets aggressive? He is a great dog. Loves my kids etc but doesnt like being washed or nails cut. And is wary of some strangers, esp if male. He isnt an agressive dog but is a rommie rescue so can scare easily and be defensive

Ring them up and tell them exactly what you want them to do. They should go with that and only that. It shouldn't be a one size fits all, if they say it is go somewhere else; and yes they will tidy up around his penis, they clear out dogs' anal glands, snipping off a bit of pubic hair will hold no terrors for them.

Warm them if you think he might not like his nails cut, they will be used to that and he can be muzzled if necessary.

My dog's double coated and I am always very clear that I do not want her coat touched. My DD's dog - also double coated - was practically shaved by one groomer and the coat has never been right.

Ring round a few groomers and go with the one who sounds like they'll listen to you, that might not necessarily be the most expensive. Also see what people who have left reviews on their website or face book have to say about them.

Just to add a good groomer will also clip your dogs nails and clear/ clean ears & teeth... anyone who saying they can't do are not properly trained. And there are lots wanna-bes out there!

Bathing your dog: make sure you use a good brand shampoo and dilute it with some water. Ensure its worked well into the coat. I usually shampoo them twice if very dirty/ smelly. Always dry the coat by using a dryer and brush!
(I use Whal Showman ... Dogs smell lovely for up to 10 days after initial bath - especially when they get wet!)
I wou l also recommend a grooming spray for brush time ... it helps keeping the coat clean and knot free.
