Puppy weeing in crate overnight

Hello... I have a 10 week pup who is gorgeous and still pretty newborn I know. She has been, for the last week since she came home, brilliant at sleeping overnight and keeping clean in her crate. Last three mornings though have come down to accidents-she hasn't cried or made a noise beforehand and am not sure whether it's in the night it happens or first thing when she wakes. Any expert advice for a first time pup mum?

Sounds like you're leaving her too long and need to let her out earlier I'm afraid.

Do you think... ? Could be.... She does crash out early, around 10 and wakes around 6.30. So keep her up later so she has a shorter time in her crate?

I would yes. It's still very young though for no accidents. I think ours was about 14 weeks ish

What have you got on the floor of the crate? Is the pee still wet (depending on flooring) it might be she gets excited when she hears you getting up.

Maybe a puppy pad (as well as less time) would help.

Pee is still wet... so we did have a puppy pad at one end which she didn't use at all until last couple of nights ... I thought maybe she was getting used to peeing on the pad? So didn't put pad in last night and now kitchen is full of just washed puppy bedding Smile

She probably need a 2/3am wee break for a month as her bladder is still tiny so can't hold very much fluid. If she goes to bed at 10pm and you get up at 6.30am go for 2am and then push it by 10 mins each day for a month and by then she should be dry overnight....Its not a lot of fun getting up.at night but its only short term and a better idea than letting her wee in the cage as this is confusing for them....

No fuss, just open cage, straight outside in small contained area, where there is grass. If she has a wee give her a small treat, then back to cage. If she doesnt pee within 5 mins just put her back in the cage. She'll get the hang of it, good luck xx

My puppy could not hold it through the night. I worked on the principle that he could hold it for 1 hour per month of age plus 1 so for a 10 week old I would set an alarm every 3.5 hours and take him outside. It is a pain to do but means they don’t pee in their crate as you don’t want to encourage that and they soon grow up and hold their bladder.

Thank you! Going to try the middle of the night wee approach tonight. Dreamwee? Fingers crossed

Ideally the crate shouldn't be big enough for them to have a "pee section". It should be just big enough for them to lie down and stretch, turn around etc but not huge as it encourages them to have a toilet area. You can get crate dividers to pop inside until she learns not to go in her bed.

She isn't choosing to go in her bed. She's a tiny baby with a tiny bladder. You need to get up in the night. And I would ditch the puppy pads. They just encourage peeing indoors.
