Kennel cough but had the kennel cough spray

Has anyone dog had kennel cough but they have had the spray preventor?

It's really annoying that you have to pay to have the spray before a dog can go in kennels if you go away but the spray is useless as now my dog has kennel cough

The Kennel cough vac isn't unlike the human flu jab. It protects against some common strains of the virus but not all.

My mom's dog moved so he didn't get the full dose

ReinettePompadour · 28/09/2017 18:07

Yes for the last few years every time they come out of kennels they get kennel cough. One had it for almost 6 months Sad

I wish I could find somewhere to have mine without the need for the vaccine. It would save me money that I can then put towards the prescriptions for their kennel cough Hmm

PhatSlag · 28/09/2017 18:09

Yep my dog had it when he was younger and about 3/4 other dogs I know caught it who’d also been vaccinated. My friend’s dog has just had it for over 2 weeks.
Not 100% sure if he was vaccinated against it but I’m sure she said he’d had it in his annual jabs. Waste of time I think and another thing to get money out of you.

As well as the vaccine not covering all strains I'm convinced that some dogs are more susceptible . Our puppy came from Battersea with very severe KC , he's 7 now , is vaccinated regularly and still gets a mild dose at least once a year despite never going near a kennels . I like to convince myself that the vaccine stops it being so bad .

SparklingRaspberry · 28/09/2017 19:45

This is why I don't allow my dog to have it.

It only protects the dog against that strain.

All boosters and kennel cough sprays are just a way of making money. Even the manufactures of the vaccines recommend NOT having them done yearly.

BiteyShark · 28/09/2017 19:48

To be honest the only reason I have the vaccination is in case I ever have to put my dog in kennels in an emergency as most kennels require it and say you need to have had it done 1-2 weeks prior to boarding.

It doesn’t cover all strains so I just view it like the human flu vaccination in that it might prevent it but don’t count on it.

sparkling We’ve agreed on this issue before, I name change a lot. I don’t believe in boosters either. I get the first puppy vaccinations and that’s it. I know of quite a few dogs who have become ill after having boosters done.

I have to disagree that vaccinations are just a way of making money. The vast majority of practices now use the WSAVA guidelines so after the puppy course is complete ( the booster at 1 year old is considered part of this initial course) that distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus are only given every three years.
Leptospirosis is given every year as it's protection is not as long lasting. This disease (Weil's disease) is very present in the U.K. And if your dog swims they are particularly at risk. It is expensive to treat and often excluded from insurance cover.
In general with kennel dogs who have been vaccinated have a shorter lived less severe version of the disease.

Is Lepto the one that guards against lungworm? My friend just told me her mates dog suddenly died in 24 hours - kept playing with snails Sad

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/09/2017 09:02

Laurie vaccinations don not protect against lungworms you need to be using a parasite protect for example Prinovox, Milbemax or Advocate to get this protect.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that attacks the liver and kidneys it is particularly risky as it is a zoonosis and can be transmitted to humans if the have contact with urine from and infected animal.

Does a dog need medicine for kennel cough?
She seems ok in herself just occasionally doing the cough thing

Ours has only had antibiotics when he had KC as a pup but since then it's just been a case of giving him tixylix to ease the cough .
