What do I do with pup?

So we are welcoming our pup home on Saturday. I've read all sorts of guides until I'm blue in the face!

Just wondering if anyone can advise me on something?

What do I do with pup when I go on the school run? I've read they shouldn't be left when first home. So do I take her? Do I crate her? It's usually half an hour sometimes 45 minutes.

TIA Grin

Do you have someone who can do the school run for the first few days until you see how the pup settles in? do not underestimate how unsettled they can be in a new home without their mum, and the first few experiences are important.

The problem is you won't have long to find out if she is ok in the car or will get car sick (ours did the first two times), you won't know yet if she will be distressed left alone.

30 minutes? You pick. Take her or crate her with a comfort kit (blanket, something to chew and a maybe a stuffed Kong.

If you are getting pup on Saturday then that gives you two days to get her used to being left for short periods. Pop her in the crate with a treat for a couple minutes at a time, building up to that half hour or so. She'll be fine 😊

Thank you all. Yes I'm mainly hoping I can bribe her with treats galore. Grin

I would take the pup with you. Or start as you mean to go on. Will you be taking her mostly once she's settled in? Short trips are great getting them used to being in the car.

Our vet suggested carrying our pup on the school run etc before he was vaccinated to get him used to all the sight and sounds. He came in the car with us from early on, initially in a cat basket on the front seat so he could see me (he's a terrier). We then moved him to a harness on the back seat between the kids but he didn't seem to like the motion or the feeling of being strapped in so now happily goes in his cage in the boot.

Either that or pop in the crate, but be careful with what toy you leave. We had a near choking incident when ours was wee, would have been disastrous if we hadn't been there.

Get it used to the car ASAP. We used to take our husky puppy everywhere. . She loves the car now and sits quietly and calmly with her seatbelt on!!

JigglyTuff · 26/09/2017 22:33

If you walk, put it in a bag and carry it. If you dry r, take it in the car.

JigglyTuff · 26/09/2017 22:34

DRIVE. Not that Scandinavian looking yoghurt word that was in my post

passmethewineplease · 26/09/2017 22:54

I could take him but the school don't allow any dogs on the grounds apparently. Hmm

I also have to push DC pushchair so probably will have to crate for half hour. I've got some kongs and treats and will see what else I can try and do to make her more comfortable.

They allow them in bags in our school :)

BLUEsNewSpringWatch · 27/09/2017 01:39

My dc's school have the same rule but don't seem to mind so long as dog is being carried.

See how pup gets on with crate training and make a decision based on how that goes.

ProseccoMamam · 27/09/2017 02:34

If she's a family pet and you intend on having her out most of the time then you need to start that now. However please do get a crate, and do not allow the kids inside it. You should make sure it's a place only she can go if she is feeling anxious or stressed out and need a break. It's important you don't overstimulate her (which will be hard because the kids will be excited). But try to get her around as many noises and places and situations that you possibly can (lots of different scenarios but in short bursts). If she is scared, hold her and talk to her calmly, like you would do a child, this will help her trust you while also learning that the world really isn't so scary. Take the puppy out and about as much as you can, obviously no walks until she's had her injections. Don't let the kids run in and swoop her up or chase her around the house in excitement. Wait unless the puppy goes to them and instigates playtime. It's just a matter of being very careful and gentle until she is settled, and then once you get to know her personality you and your family will learn together how to best involve her in activities together Smile

I will try and crate for school run and if that doesn't go well then I will carry her. and get my friend to push the buggy I have seen other people do this so hopefully it'll be OK!

Thanks for your advice prosecco, we already have a set of ground rules which includes what you're saying. Pup will be in a crate behind a stair gate to ensure the kids can't get to her when she is resting. My 7 year old is very good smarty pants with animals and she knows the rules about not winding them up or getting in their face and so on.

Am I allowed to carry her out to different places before her jabs?

Also I don't know why I keep saying he when pup is a bitch. Blush

Our vet said it was fine to take them out before jags as long as you carried them. Starts getting them used to the sights and sounds.

ButFirstTea · 27/09/2017 16:27

Definitely, take her out as much as you can before she has her jabs! As long as she is carried or on your knee (eg in a pub or cafe) she will be fine. It's good socialisation for her and will build her confidence for when she finally is allowed to start walking outside!

girlwhowearsglasses · 27/09/2017 16:32

Carry her until she's had jabs. I took ours in the car on school run and carried him in playground - I think it really helped socialise him

ProseccoMamam · 27/09/2017 17:09

Sorry reading it back I wasn't too clear but as the last few PP's have said, it's perfectly safe to take her out before injections as long as you carry her. Purely because she would be more likely to pick up illness or infection if she was walking on the floor/sniffing and biting things in her path x

BlueKarou · 27/09/2017 17:49

Have a good ol play with her before you're due to do the school run. some tug of war, some early attempts at training. With any luck you can pop her in the crate and she'll be asleep before you leave the house.

Mogtheanxiouscat · 27/09/2017 23:27

I left our puppy from day one for a 30 minute school run but always ensured he had been thoroughly tired out first. He's nearly 6 months and so far no signs of separation anxiety when we leave him. Never more than a couple of hours though.
