Parents dog behaviour change.

My parents' dog is 10 this year. A Weimaraner. He has always been a "good dog". Not destructive, housetrained with never any accidents etc. Walked twice a day. Same diet pretty much throughout. They bought a static caravan 2 years ago and he loves going down there every weekend. Knows when they're packing up and waits patiently by the door ready to get in the car. Enjoys laying in the sun on the decking.

However recently they are finding (this is perhaps the last 2 months?) whenever they go out, and sometimes in the mornings, he has been chewing at carpet, chewed through the gate they have to stop him getting out during the day (open at night he's free to lay in their bedroom or on his bed in the living room) He has regular check ups with the latest being around 6 weeks ago for his vaccs. Nothing untoward found. He's not left for hours on end on his own - 3 hours once over the weekend tops? And this is just down the caravan. Not at home. He used to - well does - love going down there, and its the sudden change in his behaviour that's worrying them.

Do they need to investigate his health further? Blood tests? Is it age related? A phase of some kind? Any experience and advice would be very welcome.

Is he neutered? First thing springs to mind would be bitches in season close by. I'm no expert but when we had a male dog years ago he could smell one for miles and his behaviour changed. Although it does seem more prolonged.

No he's not red! Thank you for that, I will mention it to them, there are a lot of other dogs on the site!
