I'm taking on my nanas dog. Have had cats, rabbits, various reptiles and rodents, never a dog!
I'm not completely clueless but it's new to me. I'm just wondering what I've forgotten and what else I need to consider

She's a middle aged small dog, not sure on breed. She was kept as a breeders dog for 5 years and though not mistreated she didn't experience much life when young so consequently she's timid. Well behaved but timid.
I have two small children but room for her to be able to be away from them when she wants.
She's used to sleeping and going into her cage when my nana went out of the house or went to bed so I assume I should keep up with this and keep it her safe space where the children aren't allowed to approach her.
I'll be bringing her cage, bed, toys, food, bowls etc everything with me.

All medical stuff is up to date she's been well cared for so after a couple of weeks I'll take her to register with my local vet. Assume I shouldn't do this straight away till she's come to trust me a bit more!

We have a secure garden with grass so she can toilet and exercise out there and she's scared of traffic noise so I think early morning and late evening walks.

What am I forgetting?! I'm actually quite nervous despite having taken on lots of animals in the past.

Thanks in advance.

Hope it goes ok.

Mol1628 · 14/11/2017 17:05

It’s been two months now! Wow.

Things have been pretty easy going.

She’s loosing weight, she’s had a vet check and boosters and flea/worming. She’s eating dog food though she is picky about what she likes! Oh and she’s had a full groom and bath so she doesn’t smell at all now which is a big bonus!

She’s fantastic with the children. Mostly she just ignores them, she’s happy for them to snuggle with her on the sofa which is her favourite thing.

She is still very anxious with the roads but she is a bit better now she’s more familiar with the surroundings. She has good days and bad days really with that, some days she walks out the door happily and wants to go, others she just pulls back really not keen at all.

What a lovely update! I'm so pleased.
You've cheered me right up after reading the Christmas dog thread and all the non reasons people find to dump their pets.
OP you should be so proud. Your hard work is paying off. Flowers

LaurieFairyCake · 14/11/2017 17:09

She’s lovely and looks really happy

Mol1628 · 14/11/2017 17:11

Ah thank you. The Christmas dog thread is what prompted me to post actually, makes me sad to think how people see all the poor dogs as disposable commodities.

Aww she is so sweet! Looks like a Westie crossed with something else to me. Maybe something like a Lhasa apso or similar little dog?

That's ^exactly what I thought lila - a westie x lhasa or shih tzu.

She should settle well OP - you are going the right way-out everything by the sound of it. She may forget her toilet training for a while if she is anxious, so if she does please have patience with her.

She's certainly a lovely little creature, and looks very sweet-natured. Terriers can be noisy though, so be prepared for this. I've had four wastes, and they were all very good-natured, fun-loving and affectionate.

I'm sure she will settle very well indeed.

Wolfiefan · 14/11/2017 17:18

I am thrilled to hear it's working out. With the best will in the world it doesn't always do so. I'm so chuffed. Lucky dog. And I do declare you awesome!!

missbattenburg · 14/11/2017 19:08

What a lovely thread. I'm really glad it popped back up to the top again. She seems like such a happy, little cutie!

Goodasgoldilox · 14/11/2017 21:40

You have done so well! It is lovely to see her settling in.

One of ours was very scared of roads and -like yours - didn't know what to do with himself when there was traffic.

We walked him close to a busy road and then just sat on a wall. We chatted and fussed him and let him gradually calm down. The third time we did this - he was so much better. We moved closer to the road and eventually walked beside it. Now he is wary of traffic but doesn't pull.

Mol little Peggy is so sweet!

We inherited my DH's grandad' s little Yorkshire Terrier just over a year ago after he passed. I was so worried about how he would manage living with us - another dog, a cat, small children etc, but he just settled in like he'd always been here! Considering our first move as his new owners was to take him to the vet where she removed his balls and all (yes all!!) his teeth, and then to the groomers for a wash, clip and pedicure!! Picture attached of him tonight ❤ He's a lovely little fella and I'm so glad we took him on, I couldn't have let him go to RSPCA or similar, he was his owners best friend for 7 years and deserved to be kept in the family. It's already decided that (in hopefully many years) his ashes will be scattered at his owners grave so they can be together again.

I hope you and Peggy are very happy together for years to come!

Ah thanks everyone. I’m really pleased with how it’s gone.
Probably the hardest thing is having to suoervise constantly with the children, but that’s just because of their ages and nothing to do with Peggy herself. But she’s my little shadow anyway so if I leave the room then she follows me anyway.

Allgooddogs what a lovely story. He certainly looks very happy there! We felt very much the same we didn’t want her in rescue.

What a great update, Peggy looks so happy Smile

missbattenburg · 15/11/2017 09:22

AllGoodDogs I am ashamed to admit I spent far too long looking at your other dog, thinking "that's not a Yorkshire Terrier" before spotting him in the bed to the side!! V sweet.

AllGoodDogs · 15/11/2017 09:25

Grin missbattenburg he is a sweetheart but oh lawd, does he get under my feet!!! I spend most of our walks looking for him only to spot him at my heels!

StandardPoodle · 16/11/2017 20:31

I'm another one who's come from the Christmas thread and found your thread so heartwarming.
She looks a lovely little thing and has found a lovely home with you.

Ah sorry I missed that before sorry! hi meg and Ted!!

I got her a flexi lead this week. Generally I don’t like them at all, however, I’m not confident she’d come back to me if she got spooked or saw another dog running so thought I’d get one to use on our more rural walks and see how we got on. Well she loves it, she really enjoys her off road walks now and is so much more relaxed. She still isn’t keen on roads but she is much much better than she was.
