AIBU to begrudge buying yet another lead?

I spent so much time with my lovely little dog today. She rode with me in the car for errands, we had a lovely long walk together around a reservoir, and had a pub lunch with me and was made a massive fuss over.

I then tied her up for three entire minutes outside the doctors surgery while collecting a prescription... and she proceeded to chew her way through yet another bastarding leather lead!

I get leather because she bites through nylon in about three seconds. This was a beautiful expansive heavy weight leather lead that had lasted 3 beautiful months. Until now.

Argghhh.

The one time I tried a metal chain lead, she bit through the handle 🙄

Is there any hope for me?

Have her teeth removed?

Floralnomad · 11/09/2017 19:24

Please don't leave her tied up anywhere , it takes literally seconds for them to be stolen and dog thefts are on the increase , it's really not worth it .

SparklingRaspberry · 11/09/2017 19:36

Yes buy another lead, and never leave her tied up again.

WineBeforeCake · 11/09/2017 20:00

Oh ffs, don't be so judgy. I live in the middle of sodding nowhere 😂 If I hadn't have tied her up for two sodding minutes to collect an urgent prescription, she wouldn't have been able to spend all day with me.

If she's consistently chewing through leads in such a short space of time then she's clearly not happy being left tied up.

She doesn't understand that being able to spend all day with you is contingent on her waiting outside somewhere whilst you go in, she just knows she doesn't like it.

If you want to continue doing it (and there's several reasons aside from potential theft that it's not a great idea to do so) then you're going to need to train her to be happy in that situation.

Wolfiefan · 11/09/2017 20:06

Never leave a dog tied up alone. Ever. I don't care if you live in a lovely rural area. You say the dog keeps chewing through leads. So stop doing this.

WineBeforeCake · 11/09/2017 20:55

Oh ffs 😂

She hasn't done this for months. I've had the lead for at least three months. It's a sporadic periodic thing.

I can categorically say that there was zero risk of her being stolen.

It was a lighthearted post to laugh about. 🙄🙄🙄

Backing away slowly from this section 🙈

Yet another lead.
Direct quote.
Don't do this.

Floralnomad · 11/09/2017 21:10

It's not being judgemental , a chap in a van stopped off in a very rural place near us last year and his small dog was stolen from his van , he had literally nipped into a house to drop off an invoice and was about 4/5 minutes . The family had a huge campaign to find their pet and eventually had to pay a considerable 'ransom' to do so . As I said it can and does happen .

Oops4 · 11/09/2017 22:10

Aw op, don't back away. It's a friendly board. I totally get tying your dog up is always a risk but so are most things. Every time a dog is off a lead or a cat is allowed outside there's a risk. Perhaps not of being stolen but of being lost/injured. I rarely tie my dog up but there are occasions when I do. But you judge the situation and decide how much of a risk it is. I wouldn't tie him up and go into the supermarket or go for an appointment with your GP but nipping in is a bit different. Our GPs is down a drive of its own so there would be very little risk of a dog being taken.

We live in a very small village and our school/nursery is 30min walk from our house and we like to walk to and from as much as possible. I take my dog out for his long walk during nursery hours and take him with me both ways. He's not allowed on school grounds so it involves tying him to the school gate for 2 minutes. If I don't do this either his walk is shortened to 1 hr from 2 and a half hours or I have to drop him back at the house and then have to take the car to pick up my child, meaning she doesn't get to walk. I think you have to judge the situation but yes, it is always a risk

WineBeforeCake · 12/09/2017 10:09

@opps4, thank you.

I do just judge everything as it happens and for me the benefit of having my dog with me outweighed the incredibly small (as I judged it) risk.

I am not sure what others would have done in the pub I went to at lunchtime either? The couple at the next table made a fuss of her while I ran to the loo. I couldn't have taken her with me to the bathrooms, and I guess they could have walked out with her. But they didn't 😏 Because that's not what normal people do.

OP posts:
SparklingRaspberry · 12/09/2017 10:17

No OP you're right, stealing dogs isn't what normal people do, but there are A LOT of people that aren't normal and WILL go round stealing dogs, hurting them for no reason or just untying them simply because they can.

Two minutes or two hours, it doesn't matter to them people. In fact they're probably more likely to snatch the dog seconds after you've tied it up because they'll know they're less likely to be caught as you've only just left it.

It's not being judgemental it's being responsible. I'd rather hold my piss and go at home than leave her with strangers in a pub.

It's still a risk big or small, and quite frankly I don't think it's a small risk leaving your dog tied up, I think it's a big risk. Not just because people can untie and steal her, but she's quite clearly capable of chewing her lead, escaping and getting run over. All this can happen in 30 seconds!

You knew she has history of chewing her lead so why leave her unattended??

MaitlandGirl · 12/09/2017 10:28

Have you tried buying from these people www.chewproofdogleash.com

I've heard good things about them.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2017 10:32

I took my dog to the public loos the other day even though there was a sign saying no dogs - I couldn't have left her tied up in the town centre (and with cystitis I decided not to piss myself)

Shambolical1 · 12/09/2017 20:57

Read up on dog theft.
Particularly if your dog is one of the 'desirable' breeds, or un-neutered.
