Booked my girl in to be spayed - totally terrified

I'm so nervous about it. ShockSad

They can't do it laparoscopically until next month so it's just a normal spay.

Please say she will be ok.

I am sure she will be perfectly fine but expect her to be a bit groggy and wobbly afterwards.

Are you planning on using a cone or a medical shirt afterwards? The only reason I am mentioning it is that mine managed to chew his cone off and I had mistakenly thought they were fool (dog) proof.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 11/09/2017 10:02

Spaying is a routine operation. The likelihood is that she'll be absolutely fine Smile. It's only natural to be worried about her, have you got something planned so you'll be busy and distracted (as far as possible) whilst she is in surgery?

LaurieFairyCake · 11/09/2017 10:16

I will be with her the whole of this week as I'm off work so I will be making sure she can't get her cone off.

I had this awful nightmare last night that they pretended she died and secretly sold her for puppy farming. And I hid out the back of the vets and hit the guy in the head with a hammer when he tried to sneak her out. ShockShockShockShock

It wasn't a good dream though hammering the abductor in the head was quite a good feeling

I'm going to go shopping at Hobbycraft while she's in - that will keep me amused for hours

Is she going in today/this week?

We had our dog spayed last June and she was fine. Well, we adopted her in November and she was MIGHTY suspicious that people she trusted (us) had hurt her Sad She was wobbly all afternoon and slept a lot. We put water near her and just let her be. Did it while ds was at school and he had strict instructions when he got home to leave her be.

It took i think 10 days for her tummy to look better and stop licking it. She didn't have a cone or anything as it was lapari-wotsit and minimum cutting.

You now cannot see anything and she lifts her leg for tummy tickles everytime we walk past Grin

It is good you are concerned - shows love and empathy. It is good you have a week off to keep an eye on her and cater to her every whim - roast chicken and sausages while you spoon water into her mouth!

And sorry but your dream made me laugh Blush

LaurieFairyCake · 11/09/2017 10:31

Thank you. I wish she could have it done laporoscopically (even though it's 700 quid) but they need extra staff to do it and can't do it til the end of the month. I don't want her coming in to season again as it lasted a month last time.

It's tomorrow. Will be shit scared til they call me and say she's come round.

I'm glad my dream made you laugh - must resist taking a hammer tomorrow - don't want to go to the vets 'tooled up' Grin

It's understandable that you're worried. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and your biggest worry will be trying to stop her running around Smile

elQuintoConyo · 11/09/2017 21:39

£700 Shock ours was €210 (about the same in pounds, given the exchange rate) albeit a special offer the vetvwasvrunning that month. It was €290 for dogs over 20kg - Alice scraped under with 19.78kg, we joked we hadn't fed her for 3 days Grin

She was supposed to be in theatre until midday then they'd call us to pick her up around 5pm, but she was freaking out so they called us early and we got her at 12.30! By about 6pm she had run upstairs to sleep on our bedroom floor where we fed her the chicken and sausages.

It didn't take her long to be un-woozey. It didn't take stitches long to disappear and be healthy pink. She was also about to get her blob again and i couldn't face 5 weeks of being careful walking her on a lead (she lives mostly off-lead) and following her round the house with a wetwipe (100% tiled floor). Ballache!

I'll be thinking of your doggy tomoro Flowers

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2017 14:32

I've picked her up, she's alive but looks very unhappy. She's constantly drooling (apparently a side effect of the pre-med) and she can't walk with the collar on at all - I had to carry her in from the car and I've popped her on the rug where she's passed out I think.

Feel so sorry for her Sad- she's just low level whined for the last twenty minutes

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 12/09/2017 15:33

OP mine stood in the kitchen wobbling and whined on and off for the first night. It's heartbreaking to hear but they do recover from it quickly.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2017 15:35

Thank you, I really hope so - want my bouncy girl back so much Sad- she looks at me as if I did this to her

OP posts:
BeansOnToastWithCheese · 12/09/2017 15:38

I got BeansDog done two weeks ago. The first night was a bit grim - she cried on and off all night and her breathing was pretty irregular but after the first 24 hours she was absolutely fine and is back to her usual self.

I was quite worried about the breathing but the vet said it's an after effect of the GA/it's what happens when they're in pain sometimes. Did the vet give you any painkillers for the next few days?

misshannah · 12/09/2017 15:43

Mine was almost back to normal the very next day. My DP and i were hoping for a few quiet days, we were very disappointed. She's a Jack Terror so very, very energetic.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2017 16:06

Mines is also a terrier (Scottish). I've got painkillers to start her on tomorrow. She keeps grumbling.

That's good. I gave BeansDog (also a terrier, although an unholy mix of JRT, Yorkie and Dachshund) painkillers with breakfast the next day and then every day until the vet told me to stop, and she's honestly been fine since approx 24 hours after the op. Hope your girl is ok in the morning :-)

elQuintoConyo · 12/09/2017 18:10

Oh that little face! "What's going on, Mummy? I've got an ouchy!" Sad

Flowers for both of you.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 12/09/2017 18:25

Yup, that there is the terrier stink eye Grin. You must be relieved she is through it safe and sound. She will bounce back very soon Flowers

We had our 2 golden retrievers spayed i April didn't use the head ones got them navy baby go things from the vets they were great and dogs preferred them. Me and hubby slept downstairs with them for the first few days when we got home and I took a week off work....thy were up and around after the irish day but we didn't take them out or 10 days walking we also put stair gate at bottom of the stairs....not as scary as you think it will be

Mum2OneTeen · 13/09/2017 08:09

Oh, that sad little face! Give her lots of treats and cuddles. What a dear little pup, hope she's soon up & about.

It's awful when they're in pain from something we've inflicted ie: spaying. I remember feeling so goddamn guilty when we had our DDog boy BC desexed and back dew claws removed.

Sending pats and ear rubs to your gorgeous doggo & flowers Flowers for you.

fannydaggerz · 13/09/2017 08:32

She will be fine.

Are they going in from her tummy or are they spaying from her side?

She will be very sleepy when you pick her up. Offer food and water. I syringed water into my girls mouth after she was spayed to keep her hydrated although you don't need to do that.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2017 09:01

I've had to take the head cone off this morning as she's basically terrified with it on. I took her outside for a pee in it and it's windy so she's scared.

She's not peed yet though has drank and eaten plenty since yesterday afternoon - I'm going to call the vets now once I've taken her out again with the cone off to see if she does.

She's still quite snoozy though is interested in food.

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2017 09:01

I think it's the tummy, there's a plaster over it - apparently it just looks like a scratch down the middle

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2017 10:07

She's finally done a wee Smile so happy

I had to let her go outside and down the steps by herself - she's not keen on being picked up

Clearly the pain killer has kicked in now

strongasmeringue · 13/09/2017 16:41

I'm glad she survived, and you too.

Mine is having hers on Tuesday and I'm worried too. I think she's gearing up to another season as she's off her breakfast and she did that for a month before before starting to bleed. Her season lasted 4-5 weeks and she's not quite three months on from when she started bleeding.
