Cockapoos....WTF?!

We're looking after our daughter's 14 month Cockapoo while she's away. She's lovely, and gets on great with our 2 year old Border Terrier but GOOD GRIEF, SHE'S BONKERS!!

Endless energy, seems to soak up mud and water, takes ages to dry, barks continually the moment you put on the lead until she's let off, runs the terrier ragged, barked so much at night we had to bring her upstairs (big 'no-no' for my OH Grin) and has basically left us exhausted. Is this normal for Cockapoos or is she an exception?

We love her, and our daughter absolutely adores her but boy, she's hard work. I'd been vaguely thinking about one as a 2nd dog when our BT is 3 or 4 but this has put me right off. I know terrier breeds are usually thought hard work but I've never known one as crazy as this!!

It sounds like any untrained poodle or cocker spaniel. Both breeds are high energy and highly intelligent. So of course a cross produces a high energy, very intelligent dog. They need a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and calm.

Spudlet · 06/09/2017 14:12

Standard. We used to have a few in my old training class. Batshit. Lovely, but utterly batshit.

And that's coming from someone who has a cocker...!

Hoppinggreen · 06/09/2017 14:49

Cross 2 high energy breeds and guess what you get?

Treysanatomy · 06/09/2017 15:00

Yes, my mum has one. Completely bonkers. Lovely, but batshit.

LittlePearl · 06/09/2017 15:23

Thanks for the replies...... I think we'll cross them off the wish-list then!

Only 4 hours 40 minutes until she gets picked up, then I'm off to a darkened room to recover....Grin

I have a cocker spaniel and a cavapoo.

My cavapoo is timid, very chilled and not that crazy. When off her lead she runs wild in circles around our cocker. She's very fast I'll give you that.

Our cocker (show type) is bonkers, wants to play 24/7. She must drive our other dog crazy with her antics.

We had cocker first, and other than teething issues she was actually quite lazy, when cavapoo came she total came out of her shell and turned into this playful bonkers dog.

I love them, fits in with my bonkers family x

DeepfriedPizza · 06/09/2017 16:22

My mum has a Poochon (poodle bichon) my sister has a cavachon (cav spaniel and bichon) both are batshit

neither have had any training

Spudlet · 06/09/2017 16:53

They do actually respond well to training, they're very clever and they love learning. Especially training with a bit of a gundog vibe, and stuff based on play. But you do need to commit to training, they aren't dogs that do half measures. You need to be on it, or they're bright enough to make their own fun, and energetic enough to make a lot of it...!

Just get another BT, they're awesome 😉

MarcoPoloCX · 06/09/2017 17:52

A neighbour has a cockerpoo.
Is her first dog but it's really calm, doesn't bother other dogs, walks nicely, good recall, no barking. Calmest of dogs.

Mrsladybirdface · 06/09/2017 18:30

My dog is bonkers when she stays with my mil...she is only 14 months too. At home she isn't and is beautifully calm and would never climb on the table to eat my dinner (as she did at mother in laws! )

Lordofmyflies · 06/09/2017 18:47

they are nuts! I sometimes look after a friends cocker-too for the weekend and he's hard work. Constantly on the go, sucks up mud, rolls in smells and a general bad ass. My friend always brings me wine when she collects him.

LittlePearl · 06/09/2017 22:27

She's gone now....had a big clear up and peace has descended. BT snoozing on my lap, and yes Oops, another BT is almost certainly the top choice for Pearldog 2 Grin. I was briefly tempted by that gorgeous Cockerpoo fur - until I had to wash, dry and groom it for 3 days, ha ha!

We're waiting in our BT number 2 arriving in a few weeks 😊 I hope there still as awesome as a duo!

PerfectlyChaotic · 07/09/2017 12:21

I have a 5mth old poodle cross...she's an absolute delight but I can see how she'd very easily cross over into bonkers. They're v bright & high energy but super easy to train (consistently & constantly!). As our trainer said, we need to stay a step ahead of her at all times...exhausting currently but will be absolutely worth it 👍🏻

thetwocultures · 07/09/2017 12:30

We have one and she's bonkers in the nicest way possible!

Very bright.

She doesn't really bark (unless she hears another dog barking), very high energy on walks but calms down towards the end. Can't help but say hi to other dogs wether they want to make friends or not Blush

She's amazing with my toddler DS who sometimes forgets she's not a teddy.

And she absolutely adores cuddles, I often wake up with her snuggled in the curve of my bent legs/knees - and recently snuggled into me with her head against my belly (I'm pregnant).

Bit of a badass an no country wall is too tall to jump/climb over. She runs circles around my mums dogs.

Easy enough to groom and keep clean.

PerfectlyChaotic · 07/09/2017 12:35

Sounds about right thetwocultures 😂
