New puppy playing too rough with older dog

I wondered if anyone had any tips for me with this?

New puppy is lovely, next to no mouthing and no grabbing of people etc. She is 12 weeks old now.

Her and older dog (6) have been getting on well in the house, almost no arguments bar the odd grumble from him. She much prefers the company of humans anyway which suits older dog as he likes his own space most of the time.

The only thing I am struggling with is on walks when they are together. I am working on training walks alone but do go with both of them on occasion. She finds this very exciting as old dog is very driven and runs like the wind and she is grabbing/biting him constantly as he runs. She also tries to grab him on lead but I put a stop to this immediately- obviously off lead this is much harder as I can't catch her quick enough Grin

She will recall very well but he is just too exciting not to grab hold of as he runs. They are both a herding breed and so it is natural for them to herd eachother but it's only her doing the herding!

Sadly old dog won't really tell her off so I was wondering if there was a way to discourage this type behaviour? Poor old dog is getting fed up of getting nipped on the bum as he runs Blush

I had this and used to feel so sorry for older dog. It has got better as puppy got older. One thing I used to do was put older dog on lead (for his own protection) then when puppy rushed and grabbed him I was close enough to deal with her.

Only my old dog looks miserable as she's stopping him playing as he normally would. He likes to chase his ball and run after things but she is hanging off his side and pulling clumps of fur out of him so he has given up and walks miserably behind now Sad

We are doing separate walks so they both still have fun but it would be nice if she did her thing and left him alone a little bit.

Glad to hear it gets better!

I do rotate them off lead if it's getting too much although he can't run away on lead and she pesters him constantly. If she is on lead it's much better but she pulls and lunges to grab him which I don't want her to learn to do as she will end up somewhere around 30-40kg!

Puppies eh Grin

Watching this with interest.
I have just adopted a just turned 1 year old beagle who does a similar thing to my 3 year old colliex.
Not just on walks though, all the bloody time! Thankfully the collie is still young enough to want to play most of the time but the pup can be a bit relentless.
