Has it been crate trained already? Because it's different depending on whether it is or not.

The short answer is if a puppy is crying in their crate then crate training has moved too fast and needs to be brought back to a point where the puppy is comfortable.

This is as excellent guide to crate training that I would highly recommend reading.

I think we need more details.
When we first got out pup he was 10 weeks old and we crate trained him - I used bits of the guide that cornflake posted but not all of it.
Basically:

  • I fed him in the crate
  • I left little treats for him in the crate
  • the crate was covered and snug inside (still is)
  • i taught him to go in the crate and rewarded him for being quiet
  • when he fell asleep outside the crate I moved him into it (but kept the door open)
  • at night I slept in the same room as him for a couple of weeks
  • I NEVER opened the door when he was whining or crying (but would sit quietly next to it)
  • I played games in his crate throwing things in etc.

He never loved the crate but he tolerated it and it kept him safe. Now we only use it at night and he takes himself there to sleep at the end of his day and will occasionally retreat in there when there are lots of people around so he definitely sees it as a safe space. In the morning he doesn't rush out when we open it but he won't go in at all during the day.

Try to be relaxed about it - the puppy phase is over pretty quickly. We've had our pup for 4 months now and he sleeps quite happily for a lot of the day (although his breed is know for that and I don't think it's typical of all dogs!).

What a beauty. He's super young and super gorgeous... is he a whippet?
The puppy thread here is useful but there's a lot to trawl through.
My advice would be to make the crate his safe place - encourage him to be in there with the door open and feed him most of his meals in there. Alternatively you don't have to crate train - I did it because I thought our pup would be safer in the crate (we don't have a small puppy proof room that would work - our kitchen is living space too).
He looks lovely - the needy phase passed quite quickly for us (although it didn't always feel like that) and now we have a dog that's pretty independent (and over indulged by me!) but I reckon most of that is luck rather than anything I've done!

He is gorgeous.

He will cry if he has not been crate trained. There are articles online on training. Don't rush it though, just let him take his time.

I was lucky in that the breeder of my dog has crates so he had seen them although he had never been in one with the door closed.

I put a cosy bed inside and would leave the door open. If he went in of his own accord I praised him and gave him a treat. Every so often I would put a treat in and when he went in to eat it I would praise again. I gradually started closing the door but literally only for a few minutes to start.

My dog loves his crate now. I fully intended getting rid of it once he was a year old as it is pretty big and my living room isn't. He is now 5 and I don't have the heart to remove it. He chooses to sleep in there probably 8 times out of 10 and if he is worried (when fireworks go off) he goes in there and it seems to calm him
