Can I ask for some feeding advise for my nine week old pup ? He seems very hungry all the time. He was wormed 2 weeks ago so unlikely to be that. Should I just be feeding him at set times. I've tended to just leave a bowl of food down but it's always gone quickly. He's very active.

CornflakeHomunculus · 08/09/2017 22:40

At that age a puppy should ideally be on four small meals a day. Set meal times are preferable as 1) it's easier to monitor when and how much they're eating, and 2) it's better for house training as you can predict reasonably well how long after eating they'll need to poo.

Babyroobs · 08/09/2017 22:46

Thanks Cornflake - that makes sense. He's probably been having about six small bowlfuls a day at present. He's fairly good with pooing outside, tends to whine and let us know. Wees are a different matter, lots of accidents at the moment.

TheAntiBoop · 08/09/2017 23:30

Two questions for you experts!

How do you put water in their crate so they cat make a mess!

And I have my first training class on Sunday - any tips!!

GooodMythicalMorning · 09/09/2017 03:05

Heavy bowl. With wide base abd narrower top so cant knock it. My clumsy bully cant anyway so they must work.

Deep can you put her in a pen rather than a crate in the daytime? She wont be enclosed but be safe and not destroy stuff.

AntiBoop I don't have water in the crate as he never drinks for about 1-2 hours after he gets up so have no idea if this works but I have seen crate bowls which slot into a holder that attaches to the side of a crate so you can have the bowl off the floor.

DeepfriedPizza · 09/09/2017 07:12

GMM, she can jump from floor to window sill so she'd jump a pen. She's the size of an adult lab, I probably shouldn't even be in this thread anymore as she's 10 months now.

BiteyShark · 09/09/2017 07:27

Well if you shouldn't be here Deep I had better get my coat. We can always decamp to a teenage thread but puppy stage versus teenage stage is a bit of a blur except no more toileting issues Grin

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 08:38

I should definitely not be here. Madam is 1 in a few days. Blush

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 08:40

I really shouldn't be here. Madam will be 1 in a few days. Blush

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 08:40

Blasted phone!!

BiteyShark · 09/09/2017 10:19

Are you marking the day Wolfie with anything special? Mine is 1 at the end of the month and we are planning an early morning trip to the beach and DH is going to cook him a pork sausage as a treat Grin

FoddyWaddle · 09/09/2017 13:09

Hi can i ask you all about teething? Our pup is 9 weeks on monday and is teething like crazy. Iv tried ice but he just sniffed it and ran away. He has a variety of chew toys and we use the special teething treat with the gooey centre. He just seems to be suffering terribly.

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 13:41

Frozen carrot (or just raw carrot)
If using dried food. Soak it and stuff a kong and freeze.
And wear thick socks. Grin

BiteyShark · 09/09/2017 19:18

When mine was teething he especially liked to chew rope toys (I think they helped dislodge the teeth).

Abhorsen · 10/09/2017 09:11

Pizza - that sounds so hard but hopefully the no damage last day means he's getting used to it?

I wonder sometimes if we'll all look back in a year and think none of this was that bad and it all passed really quickly, even though it doesn't feel like that right now.

Burntout I've got simple solution stain and odour remover for hardfloor, it seems to work, I read somewhere that normal cleaners won't work and this was recommended.

Bitey I hope the cone problems are coming to an end and you got / get out a bit more this weekend.

We start puppy classes tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to them (and slightly stressed the dog or the kids don't behave) but hoping having some training to practice at home will cut down on the biting which is starting to really get to us all 🙁

How does everyone deal with the short on lead walks when they're this young? I don't trust his recall to let him off lead but some days we've gone somewhere different and ended up walking a bit longer than we should (maybe an extra 10 mins). At what age did you trust recall (I know it's completely individual but just wondering).

roundtable · 10/09/2017 09:19

We're going to visit someone today who can provide doggy daycare. She's fully insured but can you think of any vital questions I need to ask her?

I already know she'll walk on lead until they have a relationship and then she'll do off lead as long as I sign a disclaimer. I know the price for a day too.

I'm going to look at the layout of where she'll stay - there is another female dog that lives there so she'll have company for when she has to pop out for school run. However, there is always someone home as her dh works from home.

I'm hoping it'll be a good fit but is there anything else I need to know do you think?

Abhorsen · 10/09/2017 09:31

I remembered another question - what does everyone do in the rain, or what did you do when your pups were younger. We don't have any problems walking or toiletting in the rain but he is getting really wet. I feel like it's been raining almost constantly for over a week. Even when it's not raining the grass and mud are so wet he's still getting soaked and I don't know if I should worry about him getting a cold - feel a bit like the temp has dropped here in the last week as it suddenly seems really autumnal (we're in the north of Scotland so going to have to deal with cold wet weather a lot).

Should he have a jacket? Is that only for proper winter? I'm trying to dry him when he comes in but it's easier said than done sometimes.

bluetongue · 10/09/2017 09:37

Can't help you with the rain question Abhorsen. My puppy is a whippet and takes staying, warm, dry and clean very seriously Grin He even has a very handy undercover area outside to use for a toilet.

BiteyShark · 10/09/2017 09:38

Abhorsen when they are very young they stick to you like Velcro off lead. I waited too long to be honest as he was nearly 4 months when I let him off and my instructor at the time said I needed to do it now or it would be too late (they need a reliable recall before they hit adolescence and ignore you and I was too scared and that was the first thing she said I must do when I contacted her). What I did was find a safe area where there are no dogs about etc take high value treats and reward for coming back. Get a whistle as well and start to associate whistle with running back (I do 4 pips). If you are really worried get a long lead you can stamp on.

roundtable maybe ask about max dogs she has at any time. Make sure she knows which vets you use in case of emergencies. Ask about cancellation (both ways) and communication (text, email, phone) if you need to contact her (illness etc).

BiteyShark · 10/09/2017 09:44

Abhorsen I tried a coat and my dog refused to walk with it on. I just let him get wet and got some good dog towels to dry him a bit with. You can get fleece type coats that you put on them after a walk that helps dry them and keep them warm but I haven't tried them but I know friends who have.

BiteyShark · 10/09/2017 09:46

BiteyDogs eyes and paw are better but I am still worried about his lump on his neutering scar. It's looking purple but I feel like a neurotic mother keep going back to the vets :( I think I am going to take a picture and email the vets and ask if they think we need to come back for another look. I just want him well :(

Wolfiefan · 10/09/2017 09:59

I don't blame you. Wolfie pup refused breakfast a few days ago. Was very quiet. I was terrified she was going to bloat. Could it be a hernia of sorts or just scar tissue?
Birthday plans? Not sure. May take her to the beach for the first time if it's not too disgusting weather wise. Or the arboretum. Officially her favourite place in the world!

roundtable · 10/09/2017 10:27

Thank you Bitey Flowers

BiteyShark · 10/09/2017 10:34

I think he has a reaction to one of his internal stitches but we were advised just to keep it clean with diluted hibiscrub but with all the other ailments I forgot to ask how long to give it before returning. I have just emailed over a couple of pictures of it to the vets and will see what they say tomorrow. I hope in a way they say go back so they can check it out again as I am hoping to go away for a break soon so need this to improve.
