James wellbeloved gave mine the shits.

As for schedule PizzaPup gets walked for an hour at 5.45 am during the week then the days I'm off I walk her at lunch otherwise the dog walker takes her out at lunch time. She then gets another walk at 7pm. She's 10 months and a big dog
Then she pretty much just sleeps for the rest of the time but we do training when she's awake. She gets fed 3 times a day still as she likes the routine.

Fillybuster · 10/10/2017 11:27

I can strongly recommend Akela; it's an 80:20 pure meat or fish to vegetables ratio with no fillers (we've been using the wild duck version for Fillypup) and I'm really impressed. The 10kg bag is expensive but (like other pps) we don't use as much as you'd expect, so total cost is approx 70 pence per day.

I've taken to occasionally adding in a handful of raw or cooked meat or fish bits, just to keep things interesting. But no wind, no runny poos, and he happily eats it all most meals. Sometimes he ignores his food so then he just skips a meal - but then I don't give my dcs different food if they don't want to eat either!

passmethewineplease · 10/10/2017 12:45

Thanks all.

We've not long got back from the vets for the 2nd vacc. I forgot my discount voucher as well. Angry

When did everyone take out for a walk after 2nd Jab? Ive heard mixed opinions. One vet said straight away but not near any canals/brooks, one was told a week. I've just been told 2 weeks!

Elphame · 10/10/2017 13:16

I was told a week. It does seem very random. We're avoiding canals/ponds/standing water as Elfpup needed a more comprehensive vaccination than he had.

GooodMythicalMorning · 10/10/2017 14:59

We were told 2 weeks by the vet but our dog trainer told us that was ridiculous and we should be taking him out straight away. We left it a week.

BooToYouToo · 10/10/2017 17:10

I was told a week but avoid standing water. We carried him up and down the road to get used to traffic and took him to visit my neighbours dog as we knew he was vaccinated.

BiteyShark · 10/10/2017 22:40

1 week after 2nd vaccination but avoid boggy watery areas. After 2 weeks we could walk anywhere.

oopsiforgot · 11/10/2017 03:53

Hello can we join in please? 8 week old sleepingpup, as the name suggests she's sleeping a lot and very contented, house training going well and only a few accidents so far. So, the reason I've turned to the power of MN is this, in these early days do you get up through the night to an otherwise calm and quiet pup to toilet them or leave them until early morning? I've tried both, when I do the toileting at 3 she whimpers rather loudly for 20 mins once I leave her again but if I don't she's quiet but has an accident. She's in a pen/crate thing which is divided in two, half bed half puppy pad. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Greyhorses · 11/10/2017 07:22

Ah I'm at my wits end with mine and need to vent somewhere Blush

I just can not stop her pooing everywhere at night.

She has mostly toilet trained during the day although she will wee sometimes if for whatever reason I haven't noticed the wee signs.

But every night there is poo smeared everywhere no matter what I do.

So far I have tried

-crate in bedroom. Sometimes poo but she woke baby up constantly scratching and wiggling around.

  • crate downstairs. Always accidents.
-using a baby gate and putting her in small utility room with old dog. Always accidents.
  • leaving her loose- disaster!

I am getting up during the night multiple times but every morning it's a mess. She poos allover her bed and I was sure they didn't normally do this!

She's fed a half meal at 3pm and nothing after that. I've also tried feeding her very late but I'm tempted to not feed her at all in the afternoon and just give a morning meal but I'm sure this isn't good for her.

DH is starting to get angry (not at the dog but at coming down to the house disgusting every single morning)

She's 5 months old surely this shouldn't be happening Sad

Greyhorses · 11/10/2017 07:26

Also to add, she's not upset distressed or crying in any way. I check on her and she's always asleep so it must be when she's waking up!

Wolfiefan · 11/10/2017 08:05

Sleep next to her? You need to be there at the point she needs to go.
Late night walk? Sometimes walking makes them go!
Is crate very big? Sometimes they don't mess a smaller area.

Greyhorses · 11/10/2017 08:31

Wolfie the crate is big enough for a bed only, nothing else.

I could try sleeping next to her although she's in the kitchen so it could be uncomfortable Grin

I'm tempted to bring her back in the bedroom however DH is really reluctant as she was a nightmare whining every time we moved and it woke the baby up through the night. She also spends most of the night wiggling around which is noisy!

I need to do something though as it's getting desperate, she's a big dog and the house stinks every single morning Sad

I will try a late walk see if that helps!

Grey try the late walk first to see if that helps. However, if you are getting up frequently during the night to let pup out but you are coming down to poo in the morning each time it sounds like it’s when pup is fully awake and up. My dog poos around 12 hours from his last meal in the morning and we have started to move his last meal at night later so we can try and get up later but even now he often wants a poo early on waking. Might be worth trying that but also setting an alarm before you would normally wake to catch that early poo. So if you get up at 7 then set for 6 and take out and make sure pup moves a bit to trigger poo. If 6 isn’t early enough set for 5 etc. What I would do is to try and find the time it is happening to break the habit of going in the crate. Once you can stop the pooing then you can experiment with moving feed times or slightly extending the time you set the alarm to get her up.

BiteyShark · 11/10/2017 09:48

oops some people use puppy pads but it can be confusing so I didn’t use them. If you are getting up in the night you don’t need them in the other part of the crate which would encourage pup to pee and poo where they sleep. But to your question yes I would get up and wake mine to take him out and then put back again. If he cried after that I went straight back and put him outside (put on a lead to make sure they can’t play). After a couple mins I would put back in crate and repeat until he got the message that night time was for toilet break or sleep. If you don’t talk or play and just do the straight to toilet and back it shouldn’t take long for them to get it.

Greyhorses · 11/10/2017 10:01

Thankyou everyone! It helps to rant somewhere Grin she's a lovely dog in every other way and is so clever she has picked everything else up in a few goes.

I think it must be somewhere between 4am and 6am as 4am was when she was last let out and 6am is morning so I will try and find out. Might have to camp on the sofa for a few nights but hopefully it works!

The other option is to bring her to bed but if it wakes son and husband at the same time it might make things worse!

Snooglepup · 11/10/2017 10:18

Hello. We have joined the puppy mayhem. We already have a working cocker boy who is now 3 and have just brought home an 8 week old girl to join him. Going ok so far. She is happy in her crate and toilet training is as you would expect for an 8 week old puppy, some accidents, lots of taking her outside. Night times, taking her out before I go to bed, then at about 3, then she's going through to 6.15 or so when we get up anyway. So its tiring but manageable.

My biggest stress was worrying about DDog1 adjusting. It's been ok - he barks when she annoys him but he has also been quite sweet with her on occasions - bringing her toys and coming to check on her when she has whimpered in her crate.. He's a very sweet natured and gentle boy, so I'm hoping they will get along together in the long term.

GooodMythicalMorning · 11/10/2017 21:06

Sounds like they're doing fab :)

We have a new arrival, a thirteen week old chihuahua pup. She has settled really well and bonded beautifully with our giant house rabbit, from day one he has slept outside the puppy pen, washed her, played with her and is very protective.

Toilet training is going ok I think, I've owned dogs before but they were all rescue dogs so arrived fully trained. I take her out every 30 minutes if she is awake, on waking from a sleep and after eating. She has a bladder about as big as an eggcup so she is still using a puppy pad inside her pen.
She has a crate in her pen where she takes every single toy, bone, treats etc is this normal?

Most of the ground floor of our house is open plan so if I'm not close to her I shut her in. She happily plays in our secure garden as long as the weather is nice, if it's raining she point blank refuses to go out, I've tried a coat, on the lead, off the lead and carrying her to the bottom of the garden, she will just sit and shiver and then wee on either the doormat or her puppy pad when she gets in.

I'm also not getting up to take her out during the night, the reason being that I'm critically ill and use a wheelchair and at night I'm attached to a ventilator, getting up would take me over an hour, I would need to be detached from numerous pieces of equipment and then reconnected again on going back to bed.

She can't go out on proper walks yet as she's only just had her second inoculations.

The other decision I need to make is whether to insure her or not, I'd really appreciate people's views on this. I've kept rabbits for over thirty years and never taken out insurance, as a result I've saved thousands in premiums.

Fillybuster · 12/10/2017 09:53

Apologies - I've not yet caught up on the thread but I need some help please!

Our breeder recommended a combination of Frontline every month for fleas & ticks and Panacur every 3 months for worms. On that basis, Fillypup is due his next worm treatment next month.

Our (v v v expensive but incredibly local - end of the road) local vet recommended Milbamax every month (in order to deal with lungworm as as well as worms) and Bravecto every 12 weeks for fleas and ticks.

That looks quite expensive compared with the over the shelf treatments, so I'd love to know what you're all doing please?

Soubriquet · 12/10/2017 15:20

First thing hello from my 7 month old chihuahua

Chihuahuas are fab!!

Second thing, milbemax is a much better wormer than a spot on and frontline is not really any good for fleas tbh.

They have developed a resistance to them. You are better off with braveceto or advantage or advocate, as they are vet prescription only and do still work.

Hello, sorry to jump on the thread but was hoping for some advice... Got a 10 week puppy at the beginning of the week. Had to.move his crate in to our bedroom last night but we at least got some sleep and not a poo covered crate (he gets let out but I think he was so frightened being left alone it was being done as soon as we left him). So we'll eventually phase the crate out of the bedroom as he grows up a bit.

He's so attached to me which is great, however toilet training going very slowly compared to other puppies I've had. The real issue that freaking me out is that even if I leave the room for 10 seconds he cries and wees. Even if he's just been. He just gets so distressed if he's not next to me... I'm really worried, I have to go back to work in just over another week... If he's freaking out and messing everywhere I'm going to have an unhappy puppy with real issues.

I'm doing the moving away for very short periods (Iike 10 or 30 seconds even) and coming back but it really isn't making much difference, though I know it's early days.

Anyone else have this issue? Did it settle? How long did it take? I'm worrying about it so much! He'll have to be OK being left for 3 hours when I'm at work, so far can't do 10 seconds 😔

Thanks so.much for any advice /experiences

Wolfiefan · 12/10/2017 17:49

At the moment you can't leave him. 3 hours is a very long time for a puppy. 4 hours max is recommended for an adult dog. Can no one look after him?

Soubriquet · 12/10/2017 17:58

You definitely can't leave a 10 week old puppy on their own for 3 hours a day.

You're going to have to look at something. Either someone who will come and sit with him or when fully vaccinated doggy daycare

BiteyShark · 12/10/2017 18:54

Fillybuster I use nexgard spectra for flea, tick and worm treatment. Didn't like advocate as it stinks and BiteyDog wasn't keen on the smell either. It was also an issue with bathing him as he likes to swim and roll in poo :(. Nexgard is in tablet form and given monthly but is included in our vets monthly plan so no idea how expensive it is. We also use drontal tablet every 6 months for other worms.

I don't think over the counter treatment is as good as the prescribed stuff from the vets.
