Talk to me about collie/whippet/greyhound crosses! Just looking for some info as a puppy has cropped up that we might be interested in but I don't know much about this kind of dog- we have young children and cats!

They're a very popular cross for working lurchers. Speedy, more stamina than a pure greyhound or whippet and reasonably likely to have a pretty high prey drive, especially if they're from working lines.

I'd recommend having a read of this article which is about keeping high prey drive dogs (it mentions terriers but is applicable to any highly prey driven breed/cross) alongside cats. It's also worth noting that a dogs reaction to cats, even the ones they live with, can be dramatically different outside compared to inside.

Lots of people do keep high prey drive dogs and cats together successfully but it does generally take some level of management (for example I'd never leave a sighthound and a cat with access to each other when they're alone in the house) and you do need to consider how you'd cope if you ended up with a dog and cat that needed to be completely separate at all times.

My dog sometimes chases rabbits in the fields but she always lets them get away, pulls up just short and let's them get in the hedge. I think if she'd been brought up with cats from a young ages she would have been ok. She absolutely loves other dogs and people - and tennis balls. She really has a very sweet nature and seems quite intelligent and easy to train.

The best dog ever, in the history of the world, was a collie/whippet/greyhound. Her name was Elsa and she raised 3 boys to be fine young men. She was a huge part of our family and lived to be 16.

She never chased a cat even though she was a working dog. She never stepped off the driveway even when neighbour's cats were close by. She never barked or ever did anything wrong at all.
