Best chews for a 6 month old Labrador?

Cydonia · 24/08/2017 20:35

We have a 6 month old lab, she seems to have most of her adult teeth now but still LOVES to chew! I'm just struggling to find something long lasting that is also appealing to her and safe. We used to give our old dog rawhide chews, but I know they are not good for them now. She has a "stickless stick" thing that she likes, and an antler, but I've now been told you shouldn't give antlers as they can cause tooth fractures ( ditto nylabones? )
So just wondering what everyone else uses, there must be something out there we haven't tried that is safe!

Yakers are good. Pets at Home do them.

ShaneBitchy · 24/08/2017 20:38

They might not be called Yakers actually. They may have been ones I bought in a garden centre but the Pets At Home ones are the same thing. Let me see if I can find what they're called.

Himalayan Chew Bars

Cydonia · 24/08/2017 21:12

They look brilliant, thanks!

My lot really love Chew Roots. They're more forgiving than antlers but still seem to be very enjoyable to chew.

Antlers can cause tooth fractures (one of mine sheared off most of a carnassial on one Hmm) but plenty of dogs chew them with no issue at all. I think it's just a case of keeping an eye on them and removing the antler if they're trying to actually bite chunks off rather than just gnawing on the ends.

Ooh they look good too, she does love a bit of wood! A bit has just sheared off her antler so that will be going in the bin!

Nylabones are brilliant for chewers but can get boring. This alternative, Marrow Bone With Jerky Flavour, is as strong as the usual nylabone but with an added yummy centre to keep dogs interested. My dogs absolutely love them www.dfordog.co.uk/nylon-marrow-bone-dog-chew.html

Cydonia · 26/08/2017 11:18

Thanks Lime, she has a chicken flavour nylabone that she's not that keen on, might give that one a try.
I got a Yaker yesterday and she absolutely loves it. In fact a bit too much, had to take it off her and make her go to bed about midnight last night!

lol.

Yeah, mine get really bored of the standard Nylabones. Not much incentive for them to keep going. I had given up on them until these flavour filled alternatives.

ShaneBitchy · 26/08/2017 20:18

Ha! Mine ate it in about 40 mins. I was livid, I'd paid £15 for it and it said long lasting. The Pets At Home ones are cheaper so I don't mind so much.

FairfaxAikman · 26/08/2017 20:22

You can get beef scalp which is like rawhide but without the bleaching process.
Beef tendons are also good.

Our local garden centre sells buffalo horns. They're a bit stinky but they last longer than antlers. My lab has had his since the Christmas before last and it's still going. Antlers used to disappear within weeks.

Cydonia · 27/08/2017 08:08

Yep, the yak chew is nearly gone already! I saw buffalo horn chews but they seemed very hard? They were cheaper than the yakers and antlers though.

My girl won't touch her chew root which was bloomin expensive. Nibbles at her antlers or nylabone only if verrry bored. Best success with a raw marrowbone from butchers which lasts her a couple of days before I deem it too manky and bin it, she also has great fun moving it around the garden to hide it for later and a cows hoof which I smear a very little peanut butter in, which she will chew at for half an hour or so a couple of times during the day and is lasting well.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/08/2017 15:28

Good luck finding something, our lab would eat a marrow bone in a couple of hours, bone and all, they are very proficient chewers. We never found anything long lasting and safe other than the kong. Marrow bones ended in a 2 day trip to the vets and he doesn't get them anymore, antlers had sharp edges and cut his mouth. Tuff toys lasted a couple of days, but always worried about the squeakers.

I remember someone on here making homemade rope plait/chews from fleece/cloth, dampening and freezing, but didn't see it until after he stopped chewing so didn't try, but sounded like a good idea.

He settled down and stopped chewing so much at 18 months when his teeth settled down.

Cydonia · 27/08/2017 18:18

18 MONTHS??!! Shock

OP posts:
WeAllHaveWings · 27/08/2017 18:41

Yes 18 months (sorry!), just stopped chewing one day, it was such a relief to be able to replace the chewed carpets, sofa, skirting knowing it wouldn't be destroyed again (he got worse before he eventually stopped).

We had to crate at night to keep him safe from chewing something dangerous after he ate and threw up a fair amount of foam from inside a sofa seat cushion. Bitter apple spray helped, but he'd just move onto something else that hadn't been sprayed. Maybe ours was an extreme chewer, you might be luckier!

WeAllHaveWings · 27/08/2017 18:47

Or maybe not.........best prepare for chewing to last a while.

And they naturally expect that puppies will stop chewing everything in sight once their baby teeth are lost and their adult teeth have come through. And for some dogs this is the case. But for many Labradors, chewing continues long after the puppy has his full set of adult teeth. In fact it is fairly normal for a Labrador to continue to chew quite destructively up until around his second birthday. Chewing tends to fall off quite dramatically after that.

CockPisssPartridge · 27/08/2017 19:43

He ate the marrow bone! Mine lick out the inside, keeps them busy for ages but they only nibble at the bone.
My last lab though ate my skirting board. I was lucky with my current one that I was home a lot when he was younger.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/08/2017 20:35

Yep, gnawed right through the bone until there was only about an inch left. Later that afternoon he started gagging like something was stuck in his throat, took him to the vets and they xrayed and couldn't find anything but kept him in and he had a drip due to a dire rear for 2 days. After that he was fine. Vets didn't think it was the bone, so we gave him another a few weeks later and he was unwell again. Hasn't had one since,

Eifla · 27/08/2017 20:57

Pizzle is good, as are cow ears (can get both from Zooplus).

My dog likes filled & frozen Kongs too.

Cydonia · 27/08/2017 23:44

Oh no, looks like we'll have to get an xxxl crate if she's going to be in it at night for another year or so! She chewed all the bottom of the shed door today, amazing how quickly destruction can occur! "Bless" her....

Olliver27 · 29/08/2017 19:19

All mine get Stagbars, some are more fussed on them than others, the Chihuahua gets through them faster than the Rottie cross (different sizes obviously!), but they still last at least 6 weeks each.

Tooth damage is a worry of mine, but I haven't had any issues yet and I worry with everything they get. I bought a cheaper brand of antler once, cut my hand on the sharp edge trying to get the label off. Needless to say it didn't get near the dogs.

Rushed out to buy Yakkers when they were first released, not one of mine would touch them :(

StrumpersPlunkett · 29/08/2017 19:22

I bought my sisters chocolate lab puppy a freezable chew that she loved.
Made from some kind of fabric silicone type stuff lasted years. Keep in freezer the cold and chew work well apparently.
