Our 2 year old dog that we have now had about a month has just eaten another dogs poop that he came across on a walk . I am so grossed out !
I did suspect that he was eating rabbit poos the other week but i wasn't sure .
I feel sick .

Yes some dogs eat poo (any type of poo). Mine eats mostly cow, deer and horse poo but I know other dogs that eat their own poo and other dogs poo.

heidiwine · 22/08/2017 18:32

Eurgh we have a puppy (5 months) that has only once (extreme stress) eaten his own poo.
But twice this weekend I found him nosedown in a hedgerow gorging himself on another dog's shit.
He was really hungry (both times). I really hope it's not going to be a habit! I can cope with herbivore poo but definitely not stinky dog poo.
I would think that to suddenly start this all at 2 has got to be fairly unusual!

Introduction · 22/08/2017 18:33

It's not uncommon.

BellaGoth · 22/08/2017 18:35

Yeah, dogs are gross.

One of mine once ate some dog poo, then threw it up and ate it again. Envy

mummabubs · 22/08/2017 18:36

It's not uncommon- mine will eat cat poop (no other poo will do) and he's 8! I read that feeding them pineapple stops them eating their own poo, although this had limited effect on my parents' golden retriever pup. They do sometimes grow out of the behaviour, maybe google ways to prevent this on walkies? (Failing that, lots of dental chews and water when they get home to wash their mouth out a bit!!) 🙈

leighdinglady · 22/08/2017 18:43

Sometimes it can indicate their diet isn't nutritious enough. Maybe get some high quality food

Out2pasture · 22/08/2017 18:49

I have a Tibetan spaniel and it is not uncommon in the breed....
it's called corprophasia (or a spelling very similar)
my dog is only interested in other dog's excrement soooooo easily controlled by keeping my fellow on a leash

thefootofourstairs · 22/08/2017 19:00

yuk !
Also ive had to confiscate tennis balls and soft toys as he chews them (fine) but then eats some . He had tennis ball fluff coming out the other end last week .
Ive just googled and read that that isnt normal , its pica . whats your take on that ? do i need the vet ?

OnlyHereForTheFeminists · 22/08/2017 19:12

A lot of toys just aren't tough enough to stand up to chewing. My dog has been known to poo out bits of toys but I don't think he intentionally ate them, they just fell apart when he chewed them.

I wouldn't bother taking him to the vet unless you think he's got something stuck. Just don't leave him alone with toys and balls.

Out2pasture · 22/08/2017 19:16

toys that break apart aren't meant as dog toys for your dog....I have dogs with strong jaws (not the Tibetan but an Airedale and a Bulldog) and finding proper dog toys for them is a challenge.
chewing a soft fluffy stuffy and swallowing bits is not pica.......

Out2pasture · 22/08/2017 19:19

Non fabric tough dog toys

BiteyShark · 22/08/2017 19:19

When mine was small and went through his destructive stage with his toys I ended up throwing most of them out and yes it was often interesting to see what coloured fluff/material would appear in his poo Shock

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/08/2017 19:20

Some dogs eat poo some don't. In our house anyway! Boy dog not interested, girl dog always trying to eat something disgusting.

thefootofourstairs · 22/08/2017 20:03

thanks for the link out2 . I'm glad to here there's nothing likely wrong . it made me wonder as I've watched him chew a stuffed toy and then pick bits out , chew and swallow . at which point I've taken it off him. I've also seen him eat dried mud off my shoes aswell , crazy boy !

tinymeteor · 23/08/2017 11:43

Ours does it too. Mostly his own. Bloody disgusting but it's taught me to be lightning quick picking up after him.

ThereIsNoSuchThingAsRoadTax · 23/08/2017 13:03

Mine used to but has mostly grown out it now. In the past she has eaten the poo of:
herself
other dogs
foxes
horses
cows
rabbits
sheep
a deer
birds
badgers
At a year old now she is only interested in eating horse or sheep poo.
She does, however, now love to roll in poo. This is a new thing since she stopped eating it. She has rolled in the poo of all the animals on the list above except her own and other dogs. But what she really loves to roll in is dead animals - especially if their intestines are spilling out. Lovely creature she is.

Mrscropley · 23/08/2017 13:05

When my ds proudly had his first poo on his potty he ran off to tell his df. .

Our ddog beat him to it. . .
Urgh was nearly sick!!

Spudlet · 23/08/2017 13:08

I've yet to find the poop that Spuddog won't sample. He is a truly reprehensible individual in this regard.

His lowest point was the time he found what I queasily believe to have been a human poo that some dirty fucker had done in the woods. 🤢

Lucisky · 23/08/2017 13:41

Oh god, it's disgusting isn't it? My dear departed yorkie was very partial to a bit of shit, mostly wild animals and farm animals. I was walking her along a quiet bit of towpath in Birmingham and she rushed off under a bridge and disappeared. I found her on the other side of the brickwork chowing down on a huge pile of runny HUMAN shit, complete with a pile of loo paper. It still makes me feel sick to think of it. It was all dripping off the long hair on her face. She got a bucket of water chucked over her when we got back- I wasn't going to wipe that off with my hands.

LimeJellyHead · 25/08/2017 10:55

It's quite common. Don't worry. As much as it grosses us out, all the dog is thinking is it smells good and tastes good so why not eat it Smile

Keep your dog wormed and offer them incentives for leaving poop alone but don't get too stressed abut it.

SparklingRaspberry · 25/08/2017 12:02

My dog eats cat poo but leaves dog poo

My last dog also ate cat poo and rolled in fox poo

It's honestly not that uncommon

fleshmarketclose · 25/08/2017 12:34

Cow pats were Eric's preference as a pup, thankfully he grew out of eating them but will still roll in them if he manages to find a fresh one. Likewise fox poo and anything dead and rotting. Dogs are, by and large, filthy animals.

KinkyAfro · 25/08/2017 18:12

My dog ate mum's dogs poo once....as it was being expelled. Fresh out of the tap.

Waterfallgirl · 03/09/2017 18:07

Yes to my dog eating all of the above - I feel very at home here Grin
