Dog rubbing back on furniture etc

My small chihuahua/Pom cross has started rubbing her back and top of her bum across surfaces, settee etc. And licking and biting the area. I have looked all through her fur several times and I cannot see anything. No fleas, she is treated with vets flea treatment anyway.
What else could it be that is irritating her? The skin is not red, it all looks normal!

Impacted anal glands?

Ylvamoon · 19/08/2017 21:07

How old? Is she molting? Or mutted?

cheesypastatonight · 20/08/2017 08:44

It's not her bum she's running, it's her back, above her bum. She's 5. What does mutting mean?

Skin conditions?
Do you use carpet freshener?

Ylvamoon · 20/08/2017 10:35

Mutts are knots and tangles in the coat ... they can be very uncomfortable.

noitsnotteattimeyet · 20/08/2017 10:49

I thought it was matting?

She's recently had a shampoo but it seems so specific a place when I can't see anything!

Gif she's recently had a shampoo my guess would be that's irritated her skin - possibly worse on back because that's generally where people start putting shampoo on from, so had a more concentrated amount there.

It could be a food intolerance, especially if she does it more after a meal? It could also be anal glands, as someone else mentioned. Worth getting that checked. It could be all manner of allergies or irritations to be honest, or she might just like the feeling. Loads of dogs love a back/bum rub. My GSD comes up to me 4-5 times a day for a bum/back rub. She loves it. My terrier likes to rub his face and body against our hanging bath towels. Yuck I know but he just seems to love it. I would only worry if they are doing it obsessively, whining/crying at the same time or making themselves sore.

Don't get too fixated on the area she is rubbing. That doesn't necessarily mean that is the area that is bothering her. I know that sounds odd, but true. For example, a lot of dogs with an allergy or full anal glands will nibble their paws. What I am saying is, if something is bothering or irritating her, it might not be an issue with the area you see her rubbing. Just worth bearing in mind.

I don't know how often you bath her but if it is regularly, I would cut that right back and make sure to use a very mild dog shampoo and no scents. My dogs get a bath twice a year and that is it. Same with her bedding - don't continually wash it and use a mild detergent at a high temp and no fabric softener. Give her a gentle brush every day to keep dander and knots at bay and to make her feel good. Also, see if there is any pattern to when she does it. Like I say, if it is often after a meal, that could indicate a food intolerance or if it is after a walk it could be grass allergy etc...
