I have been doing a bit of dog sitting on and off for various friends and neighbours recently.
2 weeks ago I recieved a message asking me if I could have a beagle as it was being unruly whilst the family had visitors with young children, I look after this dog fairly often so told them just to bring him round.
They have now said that they don't want him back.
He is 11 months old, he has a lovely nature but is very enthusiastic about everything and needs a LOT of training.
My own dog is almost 4 years old colliexlab. I also have cats.
I have been told beagles can be challenging and I cant walk them together alone. They pull! DH is v on board in theory and is pushing to give him a home here.
However I know in reality the bulk of the work will fall to me.
Questions: How trainable are beagles?
Is it true they can never be trusted off lead?
Are they generally ok with cats? (he seems ok supervised) but keep separate when I'm not about.
I know the sensible answer is to take him to the dogs home or try to rehome him, but he's lying here curled up and snoring and my heart has melted
Maybe I could make this work Smile

A vet told me that labs use beagles because they're stupid dogs. A dumb soppy dog is the ideal pet so go ahead and adopt him.

SuperBeagle · 20/08/2017 20:24

Catch Incorrect. They are not stupid. The reason they are tested on is because they are one of the most trusting and placid breeds around. It's vile that they're tested on and that most people have no idea

FledglingFTB · 20/08/2017 20:28

They're clearly best friends already, definitely too adorable to split up now 😍

ItsNachoCheese · 20/08/2017 20:33

memove · 20/08/2017 20:37

Those dogs are beautiful!

Are you sure the Black and Tan is collie x Lab?

I only ask as he looks very much like a Kelpie to me! ❤️

TartanHare · 21/08/2017 06:23

memove he's about 1/4 kelpie on the collie side.
Well spotted!

We are informing the beagles current owners that he can stay today.

mydogisthebest · 21/08/2017 13:48

Yay so happy for you and especially the beagle.

We have 2 quite big dogs (both male). I never wanted 2. I was insistent I was not having 2. We had a 1 year old that I had trained and was literally perfect - walked brilliantly on lead, had great recall, was never destructive even as a 9 week old puppy, was house trained in 3 days etc etc.

The my husband rescued a dog of the same breed (long story). He was 7 months and had been pretty badly treated plus never socialised at all (never even walked), never lived in a house. We were only meant to be fosterers never meant to keep him.

Off he goes to his new home and a week later the rescue association phone and say it hasn't worked out can we take him back but only as a foster while they sort out new home. So we do.

Anyway repeat the above 3 more times with the longest time in his supposed new home a week and the shortest 1 night!

Back he came and no way was I letting that poor boy go anywhere else. I wanted to rename him Boomerang because he just kept coming back!

He has been bloody hard work. House training seemed to take forever and because he is large he would pee a lake over the carpet! He has destroyed books, phones, tv remotes (at least 6), cushions, dog beds.

But my existing dogs seems to adore him. He literally taught him how to play by taking toys to him then throwing them in the air and playing. They play together all the time, they often lay together and will even eat out of the same bowl - they obviously get 2 bowls but will often share them both with their heads in the bowl.

I am the main walker and I can't walk them together so they get separate shorter walks and when my DH is around they get a long walk with both of us.

Rescue dog likes to lay on the settee on his back with his head on my lap so he can stare adoringly at me.

WowserBowser · 21/08/2017 14:00

What absolutely beautiful dogs!! I hope they have many happy years together! And you of course Smile

BringMeTea · 22/08/2017 10:31

tinymeteor · 22/08/2017 11:42

Congratulations OP, and good luck!

ExConstance · 22/08/2017 13:42

We have had two lively hounds with keen noses ( Dachshund and pBGV) once they are past the first flush of youth, i.e. about 5 the behaviour and recall improve enormously.

TartanHare · 23/08/2017 11:46

They have stolen my boxroom!!

Popchyk · 23/08/2017 13:43

They look like they are best pals. Plotting what to get up to next.

Gorgeous.

JessicaEccles · 23/08/2017 14:01

Our beagles were always BeagleChops. they are the most adorable dogs- soft natured, full of character and can drive you mad. Our cats totally had the run of the dog, and only used to get annoyed when she sniffed their bums too often Grin

She used to break out of the garden to visit our next door neighbour's elderly Yorkie- it was real Romeo and Juliet. God I miss her Sad

memove · 23/08/2017 15:52

Sue Perkins had a beagle. Her story made me cry when she was pts. She adored the dog.

I have a beagle x and we can't let him off lead. It's fine though. We book secure fields, do very sniffy walks, long line & canicross.

Wonderful dog with children. Housetrained and quiet. No separation anxiety. The only beagle trait is lack of recall.

TartanHare · 28/08/2017 14:43

It was his 1st birthday yesterday so we had a birthday/adoption party for him.
We invited the little old cavalier from next door too.
