Teeth

Help! Lovely MipHound had beautiful white teeth and since being banned from chewing sticks they've started building up plaque. He has very strong jaws so although he demands is given nightly dentasix they don't do the job. Trying to brush is teeth ius a nightmare - he could give toddlers a lesson in stubbornness! (Although hge does do so very nicely). As he has water from a bottle when out it makes sense to try one of the plaque removing water affatives. I was just wondering if anyone could reccomend one? Preferably not too expensive; I looked at one bottle which worked out at 12.5 days for £8!

TIA

Mine loves raw carrot which helps.
Do you feed bones?
What food are you using? That could make a difference.
I've seen a gel thing mentioned here that isn't a toothpaste I think but can't remember the name!

Dentastix are awful. Stop using them, trust me!

Raw bones.
Carrots (you could even give them frozen)

MipMipMip · 11/08/2017 22:24

He gets dentastix because he loves them! I regard them mainly as a treat. He does get carrots.

I gave all my dogs knuckle bones prior to MipHound. One of them was very strong and could break things off (knuckle bones are strongest and hardest to break). Miphound's jaw is far stronger so I worry about him breaking off shards. It's a shame though - kept teeth beautiful!

You can buy wood in pet shops that is super tough also antler might be tough enough. Wolfpup get a frozen chicken thigh regularly that she takes about 39 seconds to chew up and seems to keep her teeth pearly white.

Wolfiefan · 11/08/2017 23:34

We are switching to raw. Hoping it helps teeth too.

Dentastix are awful. Nothing good in them at all. My DM gives her dog one a day and he always has a rawhide. His teeth and breath are terrible but she won't listen.

Knuckle bones or any other weight bearing bones of large animals are dangerous due to the risk of breaking teeth. I feel the same about antlers/stag bars/hooves etc but many people swear by them.

Also keep in mind that raw bones are good, cooked/smoked/dehydrated etc bones are BAD!

Personally I'd give meaty bones. My 30kg dog loved turkey legs, but any poultry is a good start, either from the supermarket or a pet shop. The depth of the meat and the firmness of the bone were great at helping to clean his teeth. The only thing better IMO would be something with fur or feathers still on but then he wanted to be it's friend rather than eat it.

Rafikilis turkey bones are like chicken bones in that they are very prone to splintering, even uncooked. The advice is do not ever give them to dogs.

Thank you for your thoughts.
