a dog (ideally not puppy) for a cat owning dog novice

I have a rescue cat, she is around 6yo. Very chilled. Love her.

I would really like to recuse a dog. Well, TBH I really want a dog but would consider a puppy as well.

What would be a good breed for a novice dog owner that has a happy cat and a (mature) 9 year old.
My criteria is that I want a small dog for camping/car purposes. And ideally someone who isn't that yappy.

[Going back to the rescue next week to get their opinion as well]

I wouldn't get too hung up on breed if you're going to be looking at adult dogs. If you were looking for a puppy then it is sensible to avoid certain breeds or types of dog which have a reasonable likelihood of developing traits you don't want but an adult dog (from a decent rescue who knows their dogs well) will pretty much be what you see is what you get and you will get anomalous individuals within breeds you might not otherwise consider for your particular situation.

I would say go to rescues who either properly and thoroughly cat test their dogs (i.e. they don't walk a cat in a carrier past a kennel and declare the dog "cat safe" if it doesn't go batshit) or preferably ones that are foster rather than kennel based who'll probably have dogs who will have actually lived in foster homes with children and cats.
