More puppy nighttime woes

Long time lurker, first time poster - looking for some advice please!

So we've had our springer puppy for nearly 2 weeks now, he is 11 weeks old today Smile. So far he is pretty good, still working on housetraining but we're getting there! Our nighttime routine is: bed at 10pm after a last toilet trip outside, then i set my alarm for 01:30am and 6:00am to take him to the toilet. He does have a crate which he sleeps in, but we leave the door open at night so he can get into our small utility room. Sometimes, especially at the 1:30 time, he has pooed and weed on the floor (of the utility room, not the actual crate) and is whining a bit, other nights he goes outside and there is no mess. Basically I'm just wondering how to get him to last longer through the night and to avoid him messing on the floor...is it something that will click with him eventually or am i confusing him by letting him have the run of the utility room? He does go in the crate with the door closed in the day but usually just naps in there tbh..

Thanks! Grin

I am confident that I know more about dog training than him and his violent methods.

Goingtobeawesome · 03/08/2017 19:41

I pay my dog departure tax. She gets a couple of treats in her ball when I leave and then one when I get home = Mummy going out is a good thing as I get TREATSGrin.

somewhereonlyweknow123 · 03/08/2017 19:43

yes because its my opinion, i believe that allowed on here?

whereismyparachute · 03/08/2017 19:48

Your opinion is not based on valid research or knowledge and you are basing your methods on someone who still supports violence and the 'pack' method in dogs.

Restricting fluid for that many hours overnight to a tiny puppy is wrong.

Read the rest of the thread, not many agree with you, for good reason.

CallMeKate · 03/08/2017 19:48

Where that's only the tip of the iceberg with that despicable excuse for a human being. A lot of his methods are cruel and abusive. Angry

somewhereonlyweknow123 · 03/08/2017 19:51

great you must know me so well

CornflakeHomunculus · 03/08/2017 20:36

As far as I'm aware he's still never come out and admitted there was any issue with any of the methods he utilised in these instances. And these are just the highest profile ones.

He's a clueless twat who intentionally sets dogs up to fail then tries to bully or scare them to the point they're too shut down to do anything other than "behave".

somewhereonlyweknow123 · 03/08/2017 21:04

Again that's your opinion not mine, dogs are animals and should be treated as though you are the pack leader and then there would be a lot less problems

CornflakeHomunculus · 03/08/2017 21:14

Dogs aren't pack animals though. Social animals, yes, but not pack animals. Even wolves don't form the strict hierarchical packs it was once thought they did (thanks to a single, incredibly flawed study of a group of unrelated captive wolves) and upon which the entirety of "dominance theory" in dogs is based.

I'd highly recommend having a read of this article as well as those on this list.

Lucisky · 03/08/2017 21:16

I just watched the clip with the husky. I found it distressing. He nearly killed the dog. If that is treating dogs as if you are a pack leader I'm a monkeys uncle. Anyone who believes in this pack leader crap is deluded. Totally horrible.

CallMeKate · 03/08/2017 22:42

He's such a "wonderful" trainer he uses shock collars on dogs. Angry. It's cruel and barbaric.

I agree with others on the pack leader rubbish. Anyone that believes that shit really need some UP TO DATE advice on training puppies.

Katiekatie37 · 03/08/2017 23:35

This is probably really bad dog owner advice but my dog only stopped when I let her sleep in my room (not on my bed she has her own) but she stopped instantly!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_doghouse/2937436-Dominance-Pack-theory-what-does-it-actually-mean

Re Cesar Milan, dominance and pack theory please read this ^ thread. It explains it well.

Not beating your dog into submission does not mean they are less obedient or more problematic. Positive training gets better results than negative (as backed up by scientific research). Also a mentally broken down animal can suddenly turn - that's what Cesar Milan produces.

CallMeKate · 04/08/2017 00:08

a mentally broken down animal can suddenly turn - that's what Cesar Milan produces

Exactly!

Anyone reading this thread please do not follow previous "advice'` given. DO NOT withhold water from your puppy in the evening. They DO NOT learn to not go to the the toilet by withholding water. Would you withhold water from your child? Would you not get up for a drink yourself in the night if you needed one? No? Well don't do it to a puppy! Like children their brain will eventually engage and realise they need to go to toilet.

If people choose to get puppies then they know (or should know) it's like having a child in the house again. Afterall, they're just babies.

CallMeKate · 04/08/2017 00:10

You have a lot to learn.

GhostofYou · 04/08/2017 09:02

Just a quick update everyone - last night he was shut in his crate (with water...Wink ) and I slept on the sofa nearby - he didn't make a sound till 3am when he stirred a bit (but didn't actually cry) so I took him out to the toilet, and then he was asleep till half 6!. Success! Hoping this continues...
