Please help - dog poo on street advice

I don't have a dog but posting here for advice.

We live in a surburban street. Recently every morning we find at least 3 dollops of fresh dog muck right in the middle of the pavement, but often more. This morning there was one on my bottom step outside my front door. By the end of the day poo is trodden right down our street.

Last week I had to take toddler to doctor, picked him up and put him on my knee only to find dog muck smeared across my lap from his shoe. I can't live like this any more!

My question, do dogs tend to poo where other dogs have been? If I clean the street with mild bleach solution will this deter dogs from pooing?

I understand that this is not the dogs' fault and the problem is the owners, but what can I do/buy to (safely) deter them?

i am not certain that bleach or disinfectant would deter a dog,
can you put an angry poster up?
ask council to put a sign up?

Hi, this is a pet peeve of mine. When I'm walking my pooch I often pick up other dogs Poos!!!!

Ive heard that Jeyes Fluid deters dogs. Some of the shops in my (very dig friendly town) wash down the pavement outside their store fronts with it.

DancingLedge · 02/08/2017 09:57

Put up a sign.
I pick up after mine, but just knowing the DDog is going somewhere it's objected to, makes me feel guilty and I'm likely to try and avoid that place.

You need to contact your local council.

They will put signs up threatening a fine for leaving dog poo.

Dog fouling is the no. 1 complaint our council receives.

You could get CCTV on your house and catch the moron who lets their dog shit on your step.

There is a street near me which I won't walk on because it is always smeared (whole length) with dog shit. If I absolutely have to walk there, I walk in the road.

Try these as a first step, but it is also worth contacting your council as they will fine people for not picking up, but obvioulsy need to catch them in the act.

We had a problem with dog pooh right outside our front gate. I used Pepper Dust which seemed to deter them well. Does need reusing after rain though.

pigsDOfly · 02/08/2017 12:57

That's awful Cannot. Yes, to answer your question, dogs do tend to go where other dogs go and will certainly use the same places themselves.

Probably a good idea to give the place a good swab down, just to get rid of any poo or pee, but as pp said, it's probably not going to stop dogs using it. I'd then be very liberal with the Pepper Dust that MadMum's suggested. And keep reapplying it. Chances are it's the same dogs causing the mess and once they are deterred from fouling the front of your house hopefully your problem will be solved.

pigsDOfly · 02/08/2017 12:59

Agree with pps contact your council.

Bleach may make them urinate there instead. You could try vinegar or biological washing powder solution to get rid of smell and albas oil as a deterrent.

PeachPearPotato · 02/08/2017 13:01

Wasn't aware of pepper dust - that's probably better than albas oil actually. Dog owner here but get really cross when lazy people give the rest of us a bad name

Cannotwillnot · 02/08/2017 15:46

Thanks for all the responses. I've just ordered some pepper dust so hopefully that will do the trick. I really appreciate the advice.

Zoflora or Jeyes are better than bleach, and I would get a sign (we've got one at the end of our drive that our neighbour purchased). If it doesn't improve add a sign to suggest people are being watched - even if they're not. My neighbour suggested 'Smile - you're on camera!'
