Rescuing a dog

I'm in the early stages of thinking about applying for a rescue dog. I'm also considering puppies but I really don't want to spend £1000 on a dog when there are so many unwanted!

I have a young child and another dog.

What sort of questions should I be asking about the dog I am viewing?
What should I do with it when I go and see it (saying it as I have no idea if male or female!) as in should I be able to handle him her everywhere, walk it? Do I take child and other dog?

If I was successful and was to bring him/her home how is best to go about introducing them to the children properly. I know about puppies but older dogs is it harder?

So glad to hear you're intending to rescue! Smile

I don't recommend taking children and other dog to the first 'viewing' (maybe older children, not young ones)- you'll probably find that you do a few trips before you find/choose the right one.

The rescue centre (assuming you go with reputable e.g. RSPCA/Dogs Trust) will do a home check and ask you various questions before allowing you to reserve one usually- so I'd avoid taking young children before this point as they may get their hearts set on one that you then find you are unsuitable for or someone else rehomes.

They will ask about your family, routines etc- it is essential that you are completely honest and don't just say what you think they want to hear. It is impossible for them to help you choose a suitable dog for a successful rehome if you're not completely honest. They're not looking for or expecting a perfect home, they're expecting a real one.

They'll probably then have some recommendations and/or vetoes. You'll 'browse' the dogs and have a bit more interaction with any you are particularly keen on.

Then you make a decision, paperwork etc, small donation, dog is yours! Smile

They'll usually do some kind of follow up etc. as well but that varies between places.

Thankyou Per!

Home check booked. I can't pick a dog as they pick one for me but I just hope it all works out. I would much rather give one a home than buy a puppy if I can!
